I unexpectedly received some lily of the valley. I haven't had much success with this when I tried it once before. Most websites suggest that you soak it before you plant it. Is that a good idea this late in the year - do I want it to try to come up now? What do people with some experience suggest? Also some websites warned that this plant is invasive, is the a major problem? Can it be successful in the sun or is this just a shade plant? I'm in zone 6.
Thanks,
Phyllis
Lily of the valley help
It is very successful in my garden and is starting to spread. It can be invasive if it likes your garden but it is so pretty and the foliage so valuable in shade that I can forgive that. I just pull up what I don't want. The scent from the flowers is just fantastic. I don't think you need to soak it unless the tubers look especially dry and shrivelled. I would just go ahead and plant it or even just pot up the tubers for now until you are ready to plant it. In my garden it grows in complete shade and this is obviously what it prefers.
I am in zone 5 and I would plant it now. I have grown lily of the valley in sun and It grew well, and did not spread.
You may not want to plant in direct sun, it will burn the plant.
I basically grow it in the shade, and it has spread in the shade area. It is a beautiful flower . It is easy to clear out of an area, if you do not want it to grow there.
