Saturday, husband did in the 4 turkeys we were left with out of the 12 we started with. ( not an economical production this year). While he was at it he eliminated the extra rooster we had with our hens. We thought maybe it would help if the 10 ladies had only one roo. If nothing else we expected it to be quieter this morning with only one rooster crowing.
Well, we woke up and realised that there was still TWO different crows, one in the coop and one in the back yard. It turns out that the poor black silkie that was one of the rescues is actually a rooster. It was in such bad shape when it came, I couldn't tell if it had absolutely no comb and thus a hen or if the other chickens had pecked it off. It must have been the latter. Poor little thing is the homeliest chicken I've ever seen. It has no beard or head puff and no comb, but the rest of it looks like a silkie. Since it has no comb or puff, all you notice is beak. It's like the skiny kid in school with the huge nose. Everyone in the coop laughed at it and wouldn't associate with it so I put it in the fawn pen by the house. Evidently it was stymied by the other roosters crowing so it never tried. It's making up for lost time, but I'll never see an egg now.
guess I'd better try to find a hen for him to keep him warm and happy this winter.
One reason I can't get and egg to save my butt
Such a lucky boy to have found you....
Is he too ugly to eat or just too skinny?
lol....no help, I know, but lolol...
Go ahead grownut, laugh all you want.
Cajun, we tried to eat silkie last time we had a really obnoxious rooster. They are black inside too. Skin, bones, even the meat. Only the breast was kind of white after it was cooked. They taste the same as other chickens, it just kind of freaked everyone out.
I had heard that about the silkies. I've heard the same thing about guineas.
Poor lil roo. At least if he is crowing he feels better.
