This is my first seed pod...H memoria / gracilis
Never a dull moment , never grown from seed before. Lots flowering around it, but instinct tells me a self polination as all the others were from different sections, apart from H brevialata, which I think is in the same section?
Dominic
Yay.!!! First seed pod
I think I read somewhere that this Hoya often sets seed?
Never has for me, Dom...super that you have one. I do love that hoya~
Congrats Dom, I can only imagine how cool it would be to get a seed pod from a hoya and have the seeds germinate and watch baby plants grow. I love the foliage on the mama plant ... please keep us updated on what happens with those seeds!
Seed pop split and seeds planted today......fingers crossed..:))
Seed poD, rather
hmm, well, its 3 weeks now and not one seed has sprouted. Beginning to think I may not have done something right here
Or ... maybe they are just being stubborn and taking their time? Maybe H. memoria seeds are just real slow to germinate? I wouldn't give up on them just yet.
Dom ... how do you find H. memoria overall? I received a cutting of H. memoria in the 2008 DL co-op and it hasn't done much of anything, seems to be a very slow grower.
mine was slow to start Lin, took a year and a half to do anything. Its still not a fast grower....grows in spurts, but its a very nice Hoya when it does start to fill out. When you can, Id do some cuttings and fill the pot out with some extra rooted pieces rather than have just one cutting growing in it
I'm starting to think that these Hoya seeds are just a little difficult. I had a great germination rate on my cumingiana seeds, but have lost a lot of the seedlings to various maladies - damping off, over water, underwater, too hot, too cold etc. Out of 27 seedlings, I'm probably down to around 8 or 9. Out of those plants four look great, and the others are in doubt and may or may not make it. All I want is to accomplish is to raise a couple of these little guys from seed to flower just to say that I have gone through the entire lifecycle of the plant.
My H. memoria was also very slow to start, and now looks great. I am experimenting with growing it up a small trellis, and it is responding very well.

A lot of my H. australis ssp rupicola seedlings haven't made it. I was always worried that the seed pod never ripened off properly and then surprised that so many germinated. But the numbers have slowly reduced. Added to that, I'd left them out more in the open but partly sheltered by a small tree. Yesterday we had a long torrential downpour in the afternoon. It flattened the remaining seedlings but this morning, as you can see from the photo, they seem to be okay. So I'm still hopeful most of these will develop into mature plants.
Did you cover your seeds to germinate them, or were they left on te top of the compost...or both?
The mix is about 90% sand, and I just barely covered the seed. I misted them to keep them damp.
I will echo what Tropic said. I just barely covered mine to keep the seed moist as well.
