I'm rearranging a garden area, and I had to dig up 20 amaryllis bulbs. Should I overwinter them inside, or should I go ahead and replant them now? I also have many crinum lillies that I need to move to a low lying area, and I'm wondering if I should wait for spring. Lastly, I need to move a few 'rojo' bananas, and again I'm wondering if they would fare better if I waited until spring to move them. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
when to transplant 'rojo' bananas, crinums, and amaryllis
Don't know about the banana, but the crinum and amaryllis can be moved/planted now.

How large are the bananas? If they are small enough you can dig them and let them overwinter in your garage. If you want to directly transplant them I would wait until spring.
I picked up some freshly dug banana corms from the bamboo farm in Savannah a couple of weeks ago and they advised us to let them stay dormant in the garage over the winter and plant them out after the soil warms in the spring. They did say we could put them in a pot if we wanted to and water lightly if at all.
Thanks Xeramtheum and Ardesia for the helpful advice. Ardesia, my rojo bananas are about 8' tall and the base of the trunks are about 8" in diameter. Because the upcoming winter is supposed to be colder and wetter than normal (and I thought last winter was brutal!), I'm really tempted to dig them up. Decisions, decisions!
Even though they are big and would live if you went ahead and replanted, I bet they would fare better and recover quicker next spring if you waited.

Hi Beach_ Barbie, This will be the rojos first winter in ground. Because I'm low on GH room and enclosed backporch room ( +every window inside my house has tropical plants in front), I'm going to cover the rojos with frost cloth, mulch heavily, and hope for the best. I googled Kure Beach pics, and found some beautiful shots of your area by a very talented young art school student. The medjool? palms looked very happy up there.
Doing all that will definitely help keep it happy.
What artist did you find? This area is gorgeous and wonderfully stuck "back in time" to a certain extent.

Hi Beach_Barbie, the student whose work caught my eye is Jennifer Pridddy (jenniferpriddy photography.com). She has a cute website, which chronicles her class assignments. Brings back memories of my 4 years of art school in Philadelphia in the mid 70's.
Wonderful photos!
I actually got two new bananas this year, one is M. paradisiaca (I think) and the other was labeled "Musa sp. Pink banana - no clue, other than I know the blooms will be pink!
I still have two that are now in pots since I redid my bed that they were in. Haven't figured out where they will live permanently. Decisions, decisions!

Well I figure the best thing about gardening is nothing is set in stone (except big trees perhaps) .. changing your mind is a viable option. I moved my confederate roses 4 times before I was content and constantly move my brugs and gingers.

Brugs question, when to transplant those?? I need to move a couple and I'm sure if I should wait till spring or move them now??
Wait until they stop actively growing or slow down a lot. If they aren't huge, dig up the whole plant and bury it where you want it. I usually wait until February to move mine since by then everything has been knocked down by hard freezes and gotten the message to be dormant. I'll cut it back within 2 - 3 inches of the ground then move. In your zone I probably wouldn't cut it back at all since that might stimulate new growth.

It's hit or miss where I am to what the temps will be. Last year we had a few really cold nights but on the other hand I had tropical hibiscus blooming into Christmas. Guess I'll wait till Feb and then transplant the whole bush, they're about 3-4 high. I was worried about them burning in the sun and seemed to have errored on the too much shade side.
Hi Core, Last year I dug up and moved a brug in Dec. I heavily mulched it - I also forgot and backed over it in a pickup in Feb - but it survived and is still blooming. In your relatively mild zone, I would go ahead and move it.
