Help in rooting brugs

Starkville, MS

Help-----it has been a year since I have tried to root cuttings in water-----------and, at 78, I am not sure of what I am to do exactly. Don't you put in some hydrogen peroxide in the water to keep down algae (and how much?) and do you add any fertilizer?

Thank you,

Hi Shirley,
I don't really measure the hydrogen peroxide, but I use about a teaspoon to an 8 oz. cup of water.
Don't add fertilizer as you don't want to stimulate top growth when the cuttings don't have the roots to support it.

Thanks----I knew that I could depend on help from Bettydee--

I just change my water every other day. I have my cuttings in any container that will work. Canning jars, coffee containers, vases, lol.
I have a pretty good rate of success. I pot them after some roots have grown out (not just the nubbins).

Thank you woodspirit1------I really hadn't thought about putting the cuttings in anything but my large, plastic 5 gallon buckets. The reason is that i usually try to root rather large pieces. But, I think that I will try some of the smaller cuttings in smaller containers. Actually, the buckets are too large and cumbersome for me to empty very often. That is one reason I am utilizing the hydrogen peroxide.

I think a lot of folks that have done this for some time use an aquarium with large-holed hardware cloth over it and stick the cuttings through the holes. Or it looks something like that. They use bubblers to keep up the oxygen level. They may also use a little peroxide, too, but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone will repost a picture. I have seen them before but some time ago and I don't how to look through the brug forum except to just keep going back to the page before the last one.
