I have a problem

Lecanto, FL(Zone 9a)

I left this in the container too long, lazy me. I shot it with the hose to break it apart. It's not budging. I got one plant out with a tiny bit of root, a Aphelandra aurantiaca, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/112687/ it will probably be alright. I need to get the African Mask, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2574/. Can I cut the roots on this crazy Tree Philodendron? I got as far as yanking but if I'm gonna do that it would be better to cut.

I think I answered my own question. I don't want the philly to die.

I can't see the African Mask, it hasn't eaten it has it! Sorry, couldn't resist. I find the tree phillys are pretty resilient. Cutting the roots will only slow it for a while. As long as you give it a bit of TLC afterwards it should be okay

Lecanto, FL(Zone 9a)

I forgot which one is important, the big roots or the smaller feeder roots.

Or maybe I can just cut around the african mask and plant the rest. I'll try that cause it doesn't have much time. Yes, it's like it's being eaten.

Or what if I put it in a bigger bucket with water, won't the roots loosen up after a couple of days?

A couple of days in water might be the end of your African Mask. There was an article about those Alocasias which pointed out they were sensitive to overwatering and prone to rot. Probably better to put the lot in water and work it loose yourself so that the process doesn't take too long. My African Mask hasn't minded occasional root disturbance, within reason, so trimming the roots around it shouldn't be a problem.

I wish my tree philo would grow...it sits there mocking me!

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

as long as you get roots still attached to your philo. It will be ok. The large roots are generally for supporting its heavy mass as it grows tall. I have cut a large tree philo. down to the nub with very minimal roots and it has come back nicely within months and now covers that whole corner.

Trina, you're too impatient, you only just potted it up. You'd better find out what fertiliser Jack put on his beanstalk. ;O)

Ok , that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks all.

Not impaient, kitty kitty attacked it, so I'm hoping it survives!

That's no good. For you this isn't a time of growth so it probably won't be able to do much to heal itself. Do they make muzzles for cats? Just asking. No reason in particular. ;O)

I got rid of the Kitty kitty! after I found her playing in the castor beans I gave the cat to a nice little girl who's mom doesn't do houseplants!

A win win solution.

yep, no matter how many times I squirted her with the squirt bottle she wouldn't leave things alone, in fact she almost seemed to rll over like squirt me again, I needed a bath anyway!

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

Ha ha, I have a cat similar. The cat is a sneaky little devil and you only find the aftermath of where he has been.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL they do tend to be sneaky that way, and this cat seemed to knowexactly which ones would be the hardest for me to replace if she killed them!

Winter Haven, FL(Zone 9b)

I bought these little "Grow your own Catnip" things so the cat would eat that instead but my dog seems to eat the whole thing dirt and all so I just can't get ahead with these crazy animals.

i use very nice spray bottle that pressurizes sprays a nice sharp stream at them, and let me tell you i bring that thing out and she hides! lol

I just tell my dog "Get Pete!" and the cat hi-tails it to the bedroom!

I had a tree philo in the same pot for like 10 years and broke it down and repotted this summer. It growing babies all over the place now. Even old dead looking hunks of stem and root are producing babies by the handful. I would worry more about the little alocasia :).

Trina, give it humidity, decent light and some warmth and then stand back. Make sure it drains well especially while it's in kitty shock, lol.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

yeppers, the biggest problem was kitty used the pot as a litter box instead of her liter box so I threw the old dirt out got a clean pot and clean dirt and rinsed the crap out of what was left, we'll see if it survives

Trinawitch I found you. I and several others have been dmailing you please respond to your trades.

now that I am on I will, I'm sorry I'll tell my father not to have a heart attack on thanksgiving again or should I tell my mother to reschedule her hip replacement tomorrow because I can't come to help take care of them because the people on DG don't understand that if I'm not answering it's because there's been something more pressing grabbing my attention and I haven't been online!
