I have no idea when or where I got this plant. I have had it for at least 20 years. It has been a real challenge for me to keep as it is more sensitive to both wanting more water and burning easily from too much sun, the yellow pads are calloused brown from too much sun.
Each pad is green to light green in color and rimmed with a deep red, and stiff hairs or spines emanate from the terminal pads end on each branch. The flowers are deeply fuchsia to hot pink in color and are similar to cacti such as Rhipsalidopsis or Haitoria.
All thoughts, prognostications and emanations from beyond are appreciated regarding what this critter might be.
Unknown Epi Cactus
Sounds and looks like an easter cactus. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54384/

And I think the leaves are wanting to be in less sun.
I understand on the Easter Cactus name, but I am trying to get down to Genus species, so do you mean Rhipsalis gartneri?
I totally agree on giving the plant less sun, which allowed better growth last summer. I am planning on getting into an even better setup for 2010.
I think the full name is Rhipsalidopsis Gaertneri. Mine get to hot this summer.
Here is a web site that talks about the care.
