Found this guy

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I was chopping up some wood for a fire and this thing came out. Those survival guys say you can eat these but no way.....

Forum was slow so I thought I would throw this in. LOL.

If I were starving in the desert, I'd have trouble downing one of these! Yech! LOL.

What is it ?

Giant looking maggot type thing. Came out of a log I was splitting. Log has been in the same spot since last year so it had some time to grow "things".

Actually it's not a 'guy'....it's a queen termite...you should probably get rid of her, she makes babies.

Well that is something you never what to hear. Hope you have kept your termite bond up to date.

Yum! The way to prepare them for eating is to either stick em on a stick and roast them over an open flame til they are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside .. or, if you have a handful, you can saute them in a little butter with some garlic.

Yikes. The wood pile is now up on pressure treated wood, the stuff I split literally had termites chewing their way out hours later. I cut down a tree last year and the pieces were just to big to split without some aging. Not so smart to have them in contact with the ground I guess. I ought to get one of those termite baiting kits actually i only need the termite killer that they bring back to their nest. I seem to have baited them already.

Hey wait a minute if that's the queen then effectively I have killed off the whole colony, right?? Only one queen and without her they can function? Anyone know their termites???

Have no idea but it sounds right. Didja Google it?

Finished the area today. two years worth of pine needles along with any pieces of wood I could pick up when up in flames. Heavily damaged wood was burned up too. Think the entire bug kingdom is mad at me today, LOL. I don't know if no see'ems nest in pine straw or what but all of sudden thousands came out after me. Spiders and some odd creepy crawlers were spotted. No snakes which surprises me.

X, how do you know this stuff?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol, back in my hippy days I was a survivalist and learned how to live off the land. Grubs are actually good eating and if you can find a nest of carpenter ants you can squeeze the ants over the grubs (like you would a lemon) for a light vinegary taste .. crickets are loaded with protein and maggots are the best for calories and protein. If you can get past the squeamishness they actually are tasty .. some even spicy.

LOL :-)

Key there is being able to cook them. Deep fryer even better, LOL. Everything is good out of a deep fryer.

Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Sorry. Even fried I can't imagine it. Ach.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

If you deep fry maggots and grubs the texture is kind of like cheetos and you lose a lot of the calories and protein.
