Unheard of, truly, I lost four roses to the heat this summer. And horrors, one was Chrsyler Imperial, one of the hardiest roses on the planets. However, after going through three moves and replantings, these survived.
Duchesse de Brabant blooming on the grave of my beloved Tank, a dog that truly stopped to smell the roses.
All the rain resurrected my roses
loveisagypsy, Your roses are beautiful. I was especially relieved to see your comment about Paul Neyron. I've had it two summers now, and it's made very few flowers. This gives me hope for next year. Thanks for sharing that!
Nancy
I've been so disappointed with the roses I've tried to grow here. Yours look lovely.
loveisagypsy, lovely Duchess de Brabant. Thanks for posting for photo.
Duchess thrives in full sun like nothing I've ever seen before. And I almost squealed when I saw that bloom on the Paul Neyron. Gosh it was worth waiting for!!!
Don't give up Peony. Antique roses are the way to go, so hardy and been around for centuries!!
I've now put Dame on my list. Thanks for sharing such beauty.
No camera can capture the sheer beauty of Dame de Coeur, you will love it, and the smell is divine!!
loveisagypsy,
We have some plants in common. I have Duchesse du Brabant, the red salvia, and Dame de Couer. They are among my very favorites and yes my red salvia is now sprouting up all over creation. Bees are lovin that.
My Duchesse is lighter pink and more ball shaped with fewer petals. But like you, I agree, she is tough to beat in the Texas heat. I put Dame de Couer in the toughest hottest exposure location possible and she simply laughs at the sun. Two great roses. Another favorite is MAGGIE and and not an old garden rose but 4th of July is tough to beat in full all day sun. And the DA rose HERITAGE. Those are my best heat lovers.
My Maggie is in full sun all day, no shade and blooms profusely!!! Her smell can't be beat. I have Heritage and Hermosa on the front rose with the most sun and they bloom like mad. I bet you picked your roses like I picked mine. My criteria when I started
Disease resistant
Drought tolerant
Repeated bloomers
FRAGRANCE
loveisagypsy,
Yes, my criteria were very similar:
heat tolerant
drought tolerant
disease resistant
lots of petals, cabbagy type
However, fragrance is not that big of a deal to me. I won't pass up a rose if it meets my criteria but has no fragrance. I think Monsieur Tillier is awesome, but mine doesn't have any scent.
