Now that we have had several frosts, poor Lord doesn't look so royal anymore with tall scraggly branches going up and out. Can I prune those back?
I have to move him next spring, but assume that would be ok to do just as soon as he peeks thru the soil. Thoughts, advice on both topics.
thanks,

I have read that they should be pruned in the spring so you get less chance of rot.. I however pruned my hardies back.. thats what people around here do so...
How long have you had your hardies smurf? I don't cut any of mine, hardy or Rose of Sharons back till spring. But my hardies "evaporate" over the winter and are real late coming up in the spring.
J, I believe I'd wait for them to pop up in late spring, early summer before you move them. I've had luck with that but haven't tried to move this late in the year before. How old are the ones you're talking about moving?

deb its my first year growing them.. I'm new at this.. I didn't cut them hubby did, I told him to cut the garden down (4 oclocks, malvas, lavateras ect..) but leave the Hibiscus'.. He then went and cut it all must of missed the last part.. I was ready to snap, but people down the road have them and they cut theres down.. my mom knows people that did too so i'm hoping they will be ok...
wow, I'm surprised it's your first year with all the success you've had with pollinating and such. you must be a natural!
well i had tropical last year, but they never seeded.. I tried every flower and still nothing, hubby would call me the bee.. So i got new ones cause the others got mites in the basement and died.. So to my surprise when i figured give it one more try, and a few days out popped a seed pod... Since then i did ever flower.. (well i say every one but i'm sure some didn't cause of nature and what not) I got a hardy in aug from my mom.(only ever heard about them in july) A few days later i noticed on what i thought was a weed and almost got pulled but i couldnt reach, a flower bud ready to bloom.. I thought to myself wow that looks like the hardy hib my mom gave me just pink.. and a few days later sure it was... to top it off there were two plants (about 12" high).. how they got there and grew?? I know i planted a few hibiscus but non came up once the cannas took over but these two did...
wow, isn't that a great feeling! I'm waiting to see what will come of mine now!
good luck
sending you a dmail, Deb
