Question is this pic a female asparagus ?
It is only a flower not a berries right now.
I do not have any berries yet.
I understand , from reading that it is best to grow only male plants.
Some of these are from roots and some from potted plants.
Thanks for any help

Asparagus male and female
That sure looks like it. Except that I'm surprised to see it at that stage at this time of year.
About 5 of the 12 plants have this 'flower' on them ?
Wounder if I should pull them out and plant males.
It is my understanding that the female only bears flowers and after that comes the red berry.
The red berry dries on the plant, drops to the ground and reseeds itself into undesirable offspring and also overcrowds the bed.
I read this long ago and wish I had taken heed and rouged out the females as the article suggested. Instead, I just watched them fill in until my bed did not produce anything worthwhile anymore. This year we tilled it up because I can use the space for other veggies that produce better. But, I DO love asparagus. Sad story don't you think?
beebonnet, do my flowers look like your looked ?
I do not have any berries yet. So maybe I should 'Get to Culling".
Thanks for the reply, members here are Great ^_^
rentman I planted the Jersey Giant variety which is predominantly male. My ferns are over 6 ft tall now! I planted in April. I have seen a few berries which I plan on cutting out. If you do plan on ordering more crowns make sure they are the Jersey hybrid. I think I got mine from Park Seed. Hope that helps. Good luck!
Thanks homers, my order is in.
Yes, Rentman, the flowers on my asparagus looked exactly like yours. Mine flowered in the summer and were berries by fall.
I planted the Jersey Supreme from mail order, supposed to be predominately male but almost every plant turned out to be female and produced berries. Now I have to pull out seedlings every year.
