Oxalsis Multiply First Year?
If you start with bulbs, they're super fast. That is Oxalis Triangularis I'm referring to, the white shamrock commonly grown in pots. The purple leaved form is what I grow, and they overwinter in the ground most years for me, so I imagine they'd be reliably hardy for you. They multiply quickly, forming thicker clumps, but you can easily take offsets and spread them around. Spring would probably be the best time to plant them.
I was figuring on doing that gemini...bulbs...and planting in spring. I want to get an area going that runs about 100 square feet but don't really want to throw that much money into it. easytogrowbulbs.com wants $10 for 25 bulbs. At their planting suggestions (spacing) one each 3-4 inches for the Oxalis Regnelli I'd have to spend $ 640. Is my math right? I'd like to see good coverage by the end of the season so I'm wondering if I can cut that in half or more...providing they do multiply quickly.
Or maybe I should just settle by getting a smaller area going the first year and work from there. $640 is too much considering other plans I have.
Thanks.
From what I'm finding, O.regnellii is the same as O.triangularis (there are green leaved and purple leaved forms of this species). It's the kind I was thinking, and to give you an idea how quickly you can propagate them, I planted 5 tiny bulbs in a 6"pot one year, and the next spring had enough to start 50-3" pots and replant the original 6" pot with 5 bulbs again. I used them to edge garden beds that year, thinking they'd freeze out during winter- most survived though.
It may take 2 or 3 years to get the area as full looking as you'd like, but it really doesn't need to be that costly.
Wow, multiplicity galore! Sounds like a 2-3 year plan. Thanks again for your experience.
