Just wondering what everybody is doing to prepare for the first possible freeze of the season?
Are you trying to save stuff or let it go?
Lisa
First freeze possible
Everything is in the house as of today. You?
Tomorrow I'm going to bring everything in. Pick all my veggies that have a chance of ripening in the house and cover the veggie plants. I have laid most of my tomatoes over so they will get warmth from the ground. I'm thinking of taking cuttings from all my tomato plants but I'm not sure if its worth it to over winter them inside?
Lisa
You might want to experiment with tomato cuttings or perhaps save some seed. Last year I started seed by wintersowing and found it was so easy and fun I will never go back! I feel empowered!!! lol
I'm hoping the freeze will hold off here a bit longer. In the woods, it seems to be in a bit of a micro climate. I am trying to get a greenhouse finished and moved into ~ mostly houseplants and succulents. I've finally turned my back on the veggies but still pick enough small tomatoes to nibble for a few more weeks.
That's what has me thinking I will be starting tomatoes from seed in Jan. so I don't know if taking cuttings will really do any good. The thing is I'm not sure its going to freeze, in our micro climate we always get colder here but everything is wet so that helps. I'm just going to pick everything and if the wind dies down I'll cover what I can.
Lisa
Really windy there? I was outside working as the wind started gusting. I was getting pelted with acorns. Local weather indicated low 40°s tonight. That I can live with...
I was getting hit on the head with pecans. Now I can't decide if I should cover my tomato plants or not. I have picked almost every tomato off of them so I can't see the point in covering them, I guess. I just hate to see perfectly healthy plants die, but I know if it isn't this freeze another freeze will get them. I will cover the peppers though they are much easier. Whatever I cover I will be doing it in the dark cause I have Drs appts for my kids.

lol So should I bring in my cantaloupe? Not the plant, the melon, the one sum total of an entire year's worth of watering. I don't think it's quite ripe yet. I don't think we'll get frost, but probably mid-30s. Or go put a blanket on it?
If your in the city I would throw a blanket over it.
Cover it... I've been moving and covering ~ brrrr... it is cold tonight!
Did anyone see a frost last night?
No freeze last night, but it's going to be close tonight. Forecast is for 35ºF tonight, but it was colder an hour ago than it is right now.
I think it was 35.9° here last night. Colder than predicted. Not predicted to get down into the 30's tonight, last I checked.
It got down to 34.7° last night, apparently. Once again, the weather guys were wrong.
29* here this AM but my stuff that was covered survived, and even some that wasn't survived. Now I have to uncover everything before it rains. My bedspread and good sheets are in my garden, don't want those to get wet.
37° last nite... tonight? A crap shoot ~ who knows?
Lisa ~ you might need that bedding indoors on these cold nights. LOL

I need to order some for new plants next spring. I'm not covering much this fall.
Maggi and I worked all day yesterday to get as much as we could in. Went to bed thinking we forgot Mountain Magic and Tootsie, and oh yea Mickey Mouse Xanthosoma. Got up this morning and no frost, yea!!!. Now we get one more chance to get the rest in. We might make it.
