when to fertilize the AV

Mount Vernon, OH

When do you start fertilizeing the AV? I have different AV in different stages and wondering when to start fertilizing. I thought I read somewhere that when the AV plantlet has good roots you start with a diluted fertilizer? Also, what fertilizers do you guys use?

Hi tishrh,
There really is no hard and fast rule.A lot depends on what mixture they are planted in.A leaf planted in just perlite or perlite vermiculite mix is really not receiving nutrition compared to one planted in a soil mix or soiless mix.
You have mentioned various stages of growth. In my opinion, anytime a leaf is sending up good growth or a baby plant is growing rapidly they can use a light feeding...let me stress light....1/4 or so of what the label recommends.A larger plant forming lots of tiny buds also needs feeding, but if it has just finished a heavy blooming period, let it rest a bit.
There are so many of us with our own experiences that it's hard to say what exact food to use.Hopefully someone else will chime in.
Just be cautious....too little feeding is always better than too much.

I would only say not to fertilize a leaf that you put down to root until it has baby plantlets. The leaf is still growing and fertilizer will help it grow instead of making it put its energy into making roots. And light fertilizer, I use pretty much any kind and I switch off using different ones because they all have different elements and minerals. You have trailers that have lots of crowns, they need a little more food as there are more leaves and roots than a single plant. tish

Thanks for the info. I just got 30 leaf cuttings and wanted to not overdo it.

Hi Tish,
When you start leaves you don't need any fertilizer at all.Wait until good strong baby leaves are forming. The mother leaf will nourish them until then.
