Move over I was here first
How many is to many in nesting box
Chickens are so funny, you can have a dozen nesting boxes but they all want the same one. Kind of like kids and toys, lol.
It looks like a few more could squeeze in.....lol!!!
I have a hen that has gone broody and is monopolizing the favorite nest box. She is very LOUD when anyone tries to share. As a result the egg supply has fallen right off. Either most of them are not laying or else they are hiding the eggs somewhere in their 2 acre yard. What's wrong with the other boxes? Silly hens!
I know there is six on the bottom and another one unde the one they are in and they all think they have to lay in that one box, plus there is two barrels outside that they could lay in.Your right they are just like kids.
such fun: Green I have five buff Minorcas. Never had them before so though ok I'll buy five from a neighbor. They are not supposed to go broody. Of the five three have gone broody, they all three brood in the same nest, along with a japanese bantam. The bantam is on the bottom of the pile and all you can see of her is the black tip of her tail feathers. When I lift the lid to the nest they all growl like dogs, it is so darn funny except I have to wear heavy gloves to take the usual 4-6 eggs that are under them, and they get furious with me. I'll have to take a pic and post it. Haystack
Sounds like our Silkies haystack. We have 6 of them and at any time there can be 2 to 4 in one nest trying to sit on eggs. Of course we keep taking them away, but they keep doing it. Two successfully hatched babies a couple of weeks ago. They started sitting on eggs while we were on vacation and the person we had taking care of our animals didn't want to take the eggs away, so when we came home we had no idea how long they sat on the eggs so we just left them, now we have 3 little bitty babies.
So much for babysitters and vacations, Smedge. One never knows what they will return to. LOL. The stories of thes little feathered friends never get booring, along with the creative expressions of their owners. I have come to love the stories and the story tellers both. The wonderful world of chickens and humans is just a riot. Hay.
When i went to move my chickens from one coop to the other I found two boxes those little metal nest boxes with one EE roo.. like a 10 lb roo, Welsummer roo 8 to 10 lb & 4 hens. 2 orps, 1 welsummer & a bantam in each box. The bantam was btwn the roo's legs, the orps were actually standing on their backs. the welsummer was stuffed in the middle. If it hadn't been the dead of nite i would have gotten a pic. Another box has 5 to 6 buff orps in it. Tiny the bantam has her own box.. she growls at anyone who gets in it. :)
