Cuttings above the Y

I have a brug in the ground that came from a cutting above the Y last year, and it has bloomed during the summer. I would like to cut the stalk----put it in water and keep it on my enclosed porch over the winter. Even though it is perfectly straight, will it continue to have the blooming quality of a cutting above the Y?

But if the one in the ground comes back form the roots it will not. I will have to start all over.
