Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there is a "certified plant list" for Massachusetts? I have searched but cannot find one. I have to doa project for my horticulture program I am in and my teacher is letting me do my projects pertaining to MA since I will be moving there next Spring.
Thank you,
Susan
Massachusetts Question
certified plant list?? There is a list of banned plants from Dept of Ag. If you mean protected plants the only ones I know of are the lady's slippers & trailing arbuteus.
No, it is a list of plants that landscapers and horticulturists and nurseries us to tell them what plants grow in the area and thus they use it as a guide of what to grow and sell.
oof will have to research that one.
You can go to the New England Wildflower Society to read about the use of native plants in the landscape. They have a whole section of articles. www.newfs.org
You can get a copy of "A Guide to Invasive Plants in Massachusetts" put out by the MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife to let you know what not to plant. This covers trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, grasses and aquatic plants. www.mass.gov/masswildlife
I haven't found a site yet for the best plants to plant in MA though. Still looking.
Martha
Check the neighborhood & see what type of plants are growing for the gardeners. You may have to look for them as a lot of people are hung up on 'lawn'.
susan where are you moving too? the reason i ask is you should contact a nursery in the area and talk to them as well - they may have a web page with details as well.
I will be somewhere on the South Shore. I have lived in MA for 40 years of my life so I prety much know what plants are popular but I would like to find out what if any, the trends are lately. Research is a slow process, it will all work out
avant gardens is done by the cape they might be a good source of information.
Go against the trends, make all neighbors feel ????????????
Have you contacted the Massachusetts Department Of Agricultural Resources? I have a nursery, and my inspector is my best friend when it comes to getting any information like that.
I was just reading this several months after the fact, so I hope someone gets this...in what sense are ladyslipper and trailing arbutus "banned"--you can't propagate them? Why?
i believe it is not propagation - you can not dig them up in the wild
