Live spaghnum

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

Does anyone use live spaghnum in their terrariums? I have a plastic container of this stuff. I had potted some orchid seedlings in it and the dead moss turned out not to be dead and overgrew the seedlings. Wondering for uses with it? I guess I can let it grow and harvest it.

i have had this moss before, when i ordered some micro mini sinns & it almost took over the plants & all. I use spag moss pellets & they work so much better.

I use it and love it with Episcia, under glass.

That is very pretty. I think if I can keep it from overgrowing the container it would really be nice and increase the humidity.

OH sally! That is so pretty! And the plants look really nice. I have trouble growing the pink ones. Jannich gave me a couple recently and I'm trying again, hoping for the best!

I haven't had the moss grow, but couldn't you boil it or bake it or something and it use it after it dried and it wouldnt grow?

I think it would die if I took the top off the container but I didn't want to do that with these small seedlings. I have separated them and now I think I can just remove the top is any spaghnum grows again.

Are you growing the episcia's in sphagnum moss only, or with soil underneath? That is so pretty :).

Moss only on these.

Oh, I love that! I would like to try that. Do you have any warnings? I only have a few small episcia cuttings so I am terrified that I'll hurt them :).

No warnings. I know you need to wear gloves with Spagnum though.

I just put some moist spag. around the roots and plant in a bunch of it. This is what I do with the Cleopatra's and Ember Lace plants. The other epecia's don't need to be under glass and I use the reg. soiless mix. This works great for me.

Oh, I don't have those. I thought it was novelty, not necessity :). I may try the terrarium though, maybe with a tiny fern and an episcia cutting when these grow a little bigger, lol.
