Fuchsia procumbens

Chippewa Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Found this little plant at Annie's Annuals in the Bay Area and had to bring one back to Ohio. Hope I can post these pics, one of the flower, and another of the plant........... Here's the info:

Fuchsia procumbens

Low growing, prostrate shrub from New Zealand.
Very curious little plant which doesn't look much like the Fuschias we are familiar with.
Has rounded, light-mid green leaves on slender stems. Bears upright, greenish yellow or orange tubes with green and purple sepals, the stamens bear a bright blue pollen. After the flowers come a large for the plant (1/2 inch), red plum coloured berry.

The real feature, and the reason why Fuchsia procumbens is grown by enthusiasts world-wide, is the berries that follow the flower. All fuchsias bear berries, but none can match the fruit of Fuchsia procumbens. While the bright red berries of wild plants are scarcely larger than redcurrants, cultivated plants may have fruit the size of small plums. The fruit has a grape-or plum-like bloom and is particularly showy because it is carried on top the foliage, not hanging below it. Fuchsia procumbens is a plant that likes to show off its wares.

PC and HG, looks like this is the one for fuchsia-berry pie.....not to mention BLUE pollen!

What a cool little fuchsia! And I've read that the native peoples there used the blue pollen to decorate their faces.
One of my original inspirations for collecting fuchsias is their berries. I am in search of which one tastes the best. So far, the smaller and darker ones are the best.
Yes, you can make fuchsia berry pie, and jam, and ice-cream, etc! They sell them in the fruit markets of Brazil. Corymbiflora in particular. Mine has just begun to bloom for the first time and I can't wait to try them.

You all are right, f. procumbens is a neat little plant. One of my books says:

4"-6" tall x 3'-4' spread
trailing habit
hardiness zones 9-11
flowering summer to autumn
Grows in its native habitat on sandy dunes by the sea and the trailing stems can run as much as 20'. Small flowers freely produced with green-yellow tubes and green-purple sepals. No corolla. Stamens tipped with bright blue pollen. Green seed pods turn purple when mature and swell to plum size. Grow in a hanging basket or trail over a rock wall or sunny slope.

Good find!

I have this one on my wish list at Annie's Annuals & got an email that it's available so I just need to go pick it up now. I want to plant a couple in a hanging basket.

I'll be looking forward to your photos Calif_Sue!
And I want to taste those berries!
Salli of the Northwest Fuchsia Society sent me a cool link today to a French Fuchsia Research site. "Fuchsia Research International." I am going to post it to the sticky.
I am finally convinced the plant I purchased with the label 'Corymbiflora,' is actually just F. boliviana. Which is fine. It is right next to F. boliviana 'alba' and they are both growing like weeds out in the full sun. I am looking forward to trying their berries too!

Wanted to update onf my f.p. My gardening friend was looking at my window fuschias yesterday, and called me over. Look what I found on my f.p.! This bud is HUGE, compared to the leaves. Will send progress posts as this little plant is fascinating me. I've only had it a bit over a month........

Cool!!! That looks like one happy little plant to me! Isn't it incredible that it could put out such a big flower bud? I can't wait to see it open!
Are you going to collect the blue pollen? ;-)

clpgirl, I hope your procumbens is doing well. I doubt it is one I will ever grow, but I am really looking forward to seeing how yours is doing! Spring is bursting out all over here on the west coast, and it's headed your way.
We need progress reports!
Where is hummer_girl, hostaJim, and GGKin? How did all of the fuchsias you guys were growing inside do?

Chippewa Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Actually I am amazed at how my little procumbens is doing in the GH. All of the sudden with the sunny weather and increased humidity in there I've found several 'dead' babies were, actually, dormant, and right now, finger crossed, are 'busting out all over'.

Also got a Fuschia book on Amazon used, that noted that you don't eat the procumbens fruit until it is the size of a PLUM! Guess that why it was so bitter-LOL.

I'm sorting through my new books to choose which new cuttings to get for the summer, and try to overwinter in the GH or the house. I have that very sunny window to the south, and a tropical Jasmine I've kept inside has done beautifully this winter. I'm hoping next year I might be able to overwinter the fuchsias inside- possibly in bloom. You will be hearing from me via PC as soon as the risk of frost is done. I've been trying not to go in the GH more than every three days to keep the humidity high, but next entry I will try to figure out which of the babies made it.

I'm also WS a number of flowers and veggies, and have a little box of mushrooms sprouting (Christmas gift) which is fun. Though I haven't been posting I've been reading HGirl's references and looking forward to doing some things differently this summer.

Thanks for touching base-with you all in spirit, if not always in written word.........sometimes life has a way of getting in the way of ones' passions!!

I am thrilled to hear your good news clpgirl! I am so relieved for you!
My experiment in growing fuchsias indoors had a set back via two teenage kittens with pent up energy from being inside too much this winter. But things are recovering and I hope to start a new indoor thread soon.
I can't wait to see a plum sized ripe procumbens berry :-)

Chippewa Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Now that they seem to be taking off again, I'm going to repot them into some new enriched mix w/ a bit larger pot. The mix is pretty compressed in their current pots. Unfortunately, of course I lost most of the markers so twill be a surprise who I stil have when they bloom. LOL.

My kitties only still try to climb the Christmas tree, and they are 10, 8, and 3-oh, and still play thundering herd up and down the stairs!

Freedom, CA(Zone 9b)

I might be able to identify your fuchsias by their foliage, or at least make a close guess. Each variety of fuchsia, not only has a unique flower, each also has unique foliage. I know most of mine just by their foliage! So I know who I am tending to even when they don't have flowers on them. When you post some photos here, I'll see what I can do.
My collection grew last week and is about to incease in numbers again. Some of the new ones are still making me look at their tags for identification!
My three cats have their own tiny entrance. I don't have stairs, but it is about the same here. In and out, out and in, room to room! The little girl, Marion, is the great big hunter when she comes strutting in with a big Voodoo blossom in her mouth!!!

Chippewa Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, PC.
I will post some pics early next week. I re-potted the 'survivors' in new, 'fluffed' soil, and have them in my south and southwest windows, babying them right now. I'm optimistic about all but one, time will tell.

I picked up the DK Fuchsia book for 4.00 (total) on Amazon and am having a great time with the pics. Also found HG's recommendation, Fuchsias by Nicholass, for very reasonable price, and am studying that, to see what I might do better in this zone in the summer.....

So it goes, spring can't come fast enough for me!!!!
