Blooming and Growing in November

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Well, here in Raleigh we managed to escape any serious frost damage in October. But it looks as if we might get a freeze and/or widespread frost Friday night. So I took a few pics today of what's still blooming. The Salvia leucantha and S. mexicana are still looking good. S. guarantica and the hedychiums are also still blooming. Rosa mutablis and 'New Dawn' have a few late-season flowers. But my best-looking rose is 'Crépuscule' ... probably my favorite. It puts on a great show in the spring, blooms off and on through the summer without being bothered by blackspot or mildew, and then tries for one last hurrah in the fall. Warm, tropical color and it's fragrant too.

Since we didn't get any frost in October, Salvia madrensis 'Dunham' was able to flower nicely. I hope we escape a hard freeze Friday night so I can see it in full bloom. I love the contrast of the bright yellow against the blue sky.

as chilly as it is, I think you're right! that reminds me to cut all the flowers!

I've got Tall Bearded iris Again And Again in bloom, most of the roses blooming, and my gardenia has gotten confused and is just now blooming! I took a big bouquet of gardenias to Mom Sunday.

But I'll leave the blooms on my Encore Amethyst azalea alone. Think I'll top dress it with some manure, too.

I love that rose Tom. I just read the label on my bottle of FreezePruf and it does say flowers and foliage. I think I would be temped to try it on a rose flower and see what happens.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

That rose is luscious!

hmmm - I just looked at my garden map again - that's not Again and Again blooming. It's Angie Quadros. from a distance it looks pale yellow when it first started blooming. but close to sunset you can see it's more of a pale honey color.

Can't believe these cannas have been blooming for something like 6months now. 'Wyoming" Leaf rollers got them before I knew what was going on but think I'll keep these where they are for next year.

Core I love the bottlebrush, I have been wanting one of those. Do they bloom just in the fall or during the spring/summer as well?

I was shocked when bringing in my plants this year that my White Bird of Paradise bloomed in my yard!! In a pot no less. I never saw the bloom form because it was hidden in some cannas, but when I went to move in it... Wow! I never thought I'd see the day when I'd get a White BOP to bloom in central SC. Though I now wonder if it might have bloomed sooner - the blooms looked like pups, and I used to yank those out, lol. Maybe it would have bloomed two years ago for all I know.

just editted my post above - discovered that rhizome had "jumped the aisle" and that piece was blooming into the next row over! That's really Again And Again.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

The bottlebrushes around me bloom twice a year. Once in the spring and then in the early fall depending on how much sun light they get or that's my best guess.

I haven't gotten a BOP flower yet but it looks like I have a shot this year. We will see. Mine are planted in a protected spot outside.

Those BB are pretty .. I love reds .. how messy are the flowers when they die? Do you get volunteers?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

No volunteers and the flowers aren't messy.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

....and I think mine bloom in the summer also, at least 3 times a year here. I saw some really cute dwarf BB's in Savannah recently. They were Monrovia plants and the Secret Garden nursery had them in their booth at the Bamboo Farm's Fall Festival.

I'm only about 2 weeks late in catching up here! Beautiful stuff still bloomin', I'm happy to see.
Love the camellias. Mine are still buds at this point. We were out of town for 10 days or so. Got back to find the Fatsia japonica in bloom.

You might be right Ardesia, the BB's may bloom three times. Can't seem to remember right now.

It's wonderful to have honeysuckle this time of year. I saw some in bloom on my walk this morning.
Amazing this close to Thanksgiving! I like that Frosty Pink.
I have some coreopsis and zinnias still, and lots of impatiens. They seem to love this weather.

Pentas, that I thought had passed away, has awakened.

I thought honeysuckle was spring blooming only?

and my big white azalea (spring blooming only) has buds, and showing color to them! what's going on?

Oh! either Again And Again, or Autumn Tyrst has a bloom stalk about ready to show color! we may have irises on our Thanksgiving table!

azalea Encore Amethyst is still blooming - going on a month now. gonna have to give that baby some good manure topdressing to help to through the winter.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Deb, you are welcome to a Frosty Pink crown .. as soon as we have our first hard freeze I'll cut one back and dig it up for you. Let me know if you are interested.

All your flowers and shrubs are so pretty.

Core, please tell me more about the tea olive. Does yours get a lot of sun and how big is it. I have been considering one for my front flower bed facing southeast.

We just planted two BB by our front porch and I want them to get big so I can sit out there and watch the bees and hummingbirds. The BBs in this neighborhood are enormous. I also like the dwarf variety and would like to find some. I will check at Ace on St. Simons Island next spring. They have a wonderful nursery over there.

I have found a thread that has what I can grow here and I'm really excited when I read all your comments and look at all the beautiful pictures each of you have posted. Keep up the good work and thanks!!!!!

flipflops, love your moniker! my fav summer shoe

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Me too and I love the Ace hardware in St. Simons. For some reason the Ace's north of there do not have wonderful nurseries like they do in your area and in Jacksonville.

I fortunate enough to get to Hawaii last spring and I was amazed at how EVERYONE wore flip flops for everything, even dress up. You don't wear outside shoes in homes there so FF's are easy to slip off at the door and upon entering you slip into your inside FF's. The only regular shoes I saw were on the tourists in the hotels.

Brunswick , GA(Zone 9a)

I haven't been to any nurseries in Jacksonville yet with the exception of one right off exit 380 near the flea market on Pecan Road. We bought our citrus trees there and I will definitely go back in the spring. Still trying to find our way around down here. We go to Sam's club near the Jax airport and a couple of other places we have found. Not much here in Brunswick as far as shopping. We went to Fernadina beach several times last summer because it's so much better than the beaches here. I come up to Beaufort quite often because my cousins live in Oldfield off Rt. 170. My brother has a second home there too. It's absolutely gorgeous up there in the low-country. My favorite bookstore is in Beaufort called Bay Street Trading Co. My cousin and I always make a trip to Beaufort every time I come and it's not that long of a drive from here to go spend the weekend and do the "girl thing".

I love FFs too. That is all I wear here except for this last week now that it's starting to cool off some. The only shoes I have bought since I have been here are two pairs of FF's LOL We had to go to a funeral back up in VA last month and I had to wear real shoes and they nearly killed my feet!!! Just to think, when I worked, I had to wear regular shoes that a person would wear working in a bank as a loan officer and manager. Thank goodness I don't have to do that anymore. Shorts and capris and T-shirts are about the most important things in my wardrobe now that I have retired and moved to the deep south :-)

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

I look forward to the day I can get rid of my 'regular" shoes and business clothes and have nothing but flip flops and flats. :) Got a few more years to go for that, though!

FlipFlops, I have a Tea Olive on the northeast corner of the house. It's about 5 years old and has tripled from it's original 5 ft height.

Got some coreopsis Red Shift still blooming.

Deb have you seen any Bradford Pears that have turned? The ones across the street from me and everywhere else in Summerville I've seen are still green!
