Hi,
Earthbox instructions says 10 onions per box. That seems low to me... When planting in ground, I use 4 inch spacing and it looks to me that I might fit twenty onions in one box. I have not found anything for garlic -- but I am thinking 40 per box there too.
Opinions? Experiences?
Thanks!
How many Garlic/Onions per earthbox
No experiences with either in a EB but I plan to real soon. I had no idea how many to put but I did find this....

Looks like someone had success with planting 32 in a box.
Found this for Onions. Somebody had success with 27 in an EB.

live and learn, i never knew there was an EB forum.

I go there about once a month to read if there's anything new.
Recently I was in the same boat as essentialplanet about Garlic and Onions. Found some ideas to go off of. So I saved a few links that might come in handy down the road....and they did :)
I planted 32 garlic cloves in an earthbox about 6 weeks ago and have "green" garlic from most every clove already. I didn't put a cover on because there are so many plants and I mixed the fertilizer into the entire top of the soil. Garlic is doing great.
Ah man, I forgot the garlic, remembered the onions; but forgot the garlic (sniffles).
joy
Thanks for all the ideas. When I plant garlic in my square foot garden I use 3" spacing, and with that in mind 40 per box seems to be about twice as many as I'd feel comfortable with.
All your estimates come much closer than the official EB instructions though. I think I might end up going with around 20 or so per box.
For onions I'd have no problems doing 40 because you can always thin out and get nice green onions in the process!
Thanks for starting this thread. I have been lurking and yet no garlic or onions planted just yet.
Mark (Ray_Der_Phan) and I were nursery-hopping and saw the most beautiful elephant garlic. I'd like to grow those!
Please keep us posted. Thanks!
