My Sister-in-Law visited with someone on her way to our family reunion this weekend and they gave her several kinds of bulbs that were extras from their garden. She shared some of them with me, but by the time she got to me, she had forgotten the names of each bulb. She only remembered one kind was supposed to have red blooms and they called it a Baby Amaryllis. I don't know if this is the one or not, that they were referring to.
The interesting thing about this bulb is that it is growing another bulb on top of the bulb. Giving it a "Double Decker" affect. It's so distinctive that I thought someone may have seen this type of growth before and recognise it? The skins on the bulbs are very dark. Now I'm wondering when I plant these should I plant it clear to the top of the top bulb (where the green sprouts are coming out)? Or would that be too deep?
Double Decker Bulbs - Any Ideas on What This Might Be?
that is so cool!
Wow that is strange Diana. I havea lot of different kinds of bulbs but I have not seen anything quite like that.

One suggestion I have received so far is it might be 'Surprise Lily' Lycoris squamigera
I have checked the plant files on that one and apparently when they are crowded they find a way to get out of the crowd by growing a neck and then another bulb up above the original one. That's actually a pretty clever adaptation I thought.
If Surprise Lily is what I have, then I must have the red version. I see that they also come in pink. Anyone out there grow these?
Diana
I have the red ones.
I have pink
I have red, pink and tye-dye. Looking for orange and yellow.
Cathy
Tie-dye? Seriously?
What do those look like? I'd like to see a picture of the bloom. Maybe I'll have to start my own collection of them now. I had no idea they came in all those colors ;^)
There are several several colors in the Lycrois Family:

Even a few not mentioned in the above article such as the orange.

This is the orange: We were just discussing this subject.

My Mystery bulbs are revealing more secrets...
Since there are so many colors of Surprise Lilies and since starting this thread, I want them all...
I was looking on Ebay at Lycoris and noticed someone was selling Lycoris radiata - Red Surprise Lily. Still not knowing if that is what I already had, I went ahead and ordered some. They came in the mail today, and they have a white stripe down the center of each leaf blade.
My mystery bulbs have the same white stripe down the center of each of their leaf blades. I have also obtained some pink surprise lilies and some lavender ones in the past month and they do not have a white stripe on their foliage.
I'm getting closer to being sure that the mystery bulbs are the Red version of Lycoris. I feel like such a detective now ;^)
Here is a picture of the mystery bulbs leaf blade, showing the white stripe. Anyone out there with multiple colors of Lycoris ever notice this white stripe on yours?
Did you get your lycoris in a trade or did you find them online somewhere?
Hi Marie,
The red ones I got on E-bay, the mystery bulbs (now assumed to also be red ones) I got from my sister in law at our family gathering.
Where did you get your pink and lavendar ones?
The pink & Lavender ones were plant trades. If you are looking for those colors, I'm pretty sure I saw those on E-bay too. Just do a search with "lycoris" and quite a few choices come up.
Do your red Lycoris have a white stripe down the center of their leaf blades?
Yes mine do. OK I am going to search e-bay. Thanks :o)
