I planted 5 different types of pumpkins and because we haven't had a freeze yet they are still on vine. All the vines are intertwined so I can't tell which is which. The Thai Large pumpkin is the one I'm really unsure about. The catalog says they are black colored that turn tan in storage how do I know when to put them in storage?
Another crazy question,
Lisa
How do you tell when pumpkins are ready to be picked?
General rule for all winter squash, regardless of color, when the rind becomes too hard to cut with a fingernail. One expects pumpkins to turn some shade of orange or tan, since that is the type of winter squash called pumpkin most often in North America. Not consistant tho, as the Cushaws are also called pumpkins as are the Cheese pumpkins. Cultivars imported from Asia are usually called pumpkins, regardless of size , shape or color.
Fagtong Sri Muang from Thailand.
OK I just checked them and they are almost there. So I picked a watermelon instead.
