I got this in a trade 5 or more years ago and it has been hardy in zone 5. I was calling it Crocosmia, but don't think that is really right. The blooms don't go up the stem like they do. It seems more like a surprise lily of some sort, possibly what I list below, BUT the zone isn't hardy enough.
Lycoris sanguinea
USDA Zone 6a: to -23.3 °C (-10 °F)

Any ideas?
Is this....?
Looks like a surprise lily to me! and such an awsome color!!! let me know if you need to 'thin' out a few *S*
Me to!! I love that color. Put me on the gotta have list. I have tye dye lillies and they are not supposed to be hardy here either. Suprises do happen.LOL
What a gorgeous colour!
I would say Lycoris Sanguinea . I think I will need to add this one to my bulb collection.
Bloom time seems to support the August/Suprise Lily ID as well. The pic was taken on 08/18/2009.
Wish the clump would have spread like the "regular" Naked Ladies. Not big enough to share, I don't think. I plan to dig and just spread into two clumps instead of one first so I don't kill them off by picking a different "micro climate" or something. After that, someday I hope I can share.
I've never seen Lycoris in that color, it's gorgeous! Definitely looks to be a Lycoris though, and from the pics I see on line I think you're right on the species as well. This site says they're hardy to zone 5:

I think you should add your images to Plantfiles, they're lovely, and no pics have been uploaded yet.
Jeezzz now I want them ALL.
Me too! I had no idea most of those existed, and so many are hardy!
To me, it looks like Alstroemeria also know as a "Peruvian Lily". I have some down here, in other colors, but the bloom looks quite similar.
No, definitely not alstromeria.
I vote for Lycoris Sanguinea. Definitely from the amaryllis family. What a treat.
OK, put me in line, when you have too many, in a couple of years or so. Those will look great in my "Peach of a Garden"! No rush....thanks!
they look just like my naked lady, they come in white, red, yellow, pink, pink and white, and orange this is the first orange ive ever seen. my mother had a ton of the pink they have a nice smell. do the orange have a smell. does it have folage on it yet. i don,t think you can kill one of them, they are like crinum ive got some of those in the garden that can,t be dug they have gone so deep it would take a backhoe to get one out.oh well if some one comes by and needs one they can dig.
These are alot shorter than the pink ones, maybe half as tall, and no smell. Otherwise they have to be in the naked lady family. they are fleshy, same form, etc. Not as prolific as the pinks though. I have almost the same amount I planted more than 5 years ago, I'd say.
alwaysweeding i thought they looked shorter, ive seen them before but i can,t recall where its gota be some kind of amaryllis their is one from much shorter that blooms orange amaryllis advena the bloom looks smaller and it dosen,t seam to have as many blooms says they are hardy to around minus 10 native of argentina and chile.
Could be - have you seen any pics of the amaryllis advena? I do have to mention it gets over -20 here some years (it was -15 last night). Some individual plants/bulbs do surpass their "normal" zone, though.
i have seen a picture of it in one of the bulb books i have here at the house, but that don,t make it so if you know what i mean. i just do not know .they come out with new flowers all the time. can only guess. i have plants in my yard that have no names if it grows with little or no help i like it good.
They are L. sanguinea as noted earlier; it is maybe 2/3 the size of squamigera. The Lycoris species that put out their leaves in the spring can all be grown here in Iowa, though I think squamigera and sanguinea are the hardiest.
Don
Thanks Don - I agree.
Hope you are surviving the non-gardening season. I do miss your blog. Used to look at it each morning before starting work.
