Why would my rooster crow all night?

I know this has probably been covered before, but I am so tired I don't think I have the energy to be here at work and search for the answer.

Why is my rooster crowing all night? He has plenty of food/water. He has plenty of company (9 pullets and a peacock). He has plenty of room. I don't have a light in the coop. There is no artifical light comming in through the windows--we are out in the middle of no where. Only the moon. It has been raining off and on here for the past three weeks at least. Almost forty days and forty nights. And last night my rooster started crowing at ten o'clock at night and pretty much crowed all the way till morning. When I left for work he was crowing and he might still be crowing for all I know.

I check all around the coop and pen for prowlers (no). Checked the inside of the coop for anything unusual (no). Checked the pullets (all asleed or trying to sleep but not disturbed or jumpy or clucking). The peacock has taken to roosting outside in the run and was sleeping undisturbed. Even the outside dog was fine.

So why is this guy crowing all night?

I just got rid of one who couldn't tell time.

My roosters will also crow if the hear another rooster crow--even if I can't. And their calls carry a long way--expecially in humid weather.

Also--is he mature? Sometime the younger ones are a little...well...jacked up on crowing. If they feel challenged for any reason, or threatened, they go on a crowing jag.

Some roosters just crow all night... barking dogs, other roosters, a car backfiring, the moon, the stars, the streetlight...

It's a sick and twisted myth that they crow only when the sun comes up... it's to lure unsuspecting newbies into taking extra roosters.

I had one that my neighbor said was crowing at three in the morning when she let her dog out,But he is gone now.

Thanks for your responces! I guess I will just stuff cotton in my ears and wait and see if he gets over it. He's only six months old. He's been pretty quiet up until now....

Six months is a Very Noisy Age....I have 7 that age....it is horrible. Especially since they are in the house.....

OMG... it's like living with a garage band... heavy feather grunge clack music...

Catscan: Please don't tell me they live in the house! Please don't tell me that. I can't imagine your husband saying ok to that. I know chicken people are a little teched, but hopefully their spouses keep them on the straight and narrow. My wife has a fit if I want to bring dot is for a while. YIKES It's hell to pay. Hay.

Hi Terri: I have eight roosters now, I once had nine. The one that is missing would crow all day and half of the night. I have never heard any rooster crow that much. He was a very nice banty and the girls loved him but one day after having him for two years I just had enough. I remember seein bubbles in the chicken noodle soup and I sware it was him still trying to crow. LOL Haystack

Haystack, it's more prevalent than you may think :). I belong to a group called House Chickens, and it's not real small.

MichaelZ...I asked my DH, the Blue's Hound, about the rooster song, and he was not familiar with it...just asked if it was the one about "my little red rooster"? I wonder if it is on YouTube?

Roosters in the house...ahem....the other day, when my DH started to object that they were, perhaps, a little intrusive...I suggested that he celebrate their crowing in solidarity with all Nature's testosterone-driven brethren...and to my shock it seemed to work...of course, they are being successfully disposed of on Craigslist, so he may just be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

And Haystack: Laying hens were historically kept in the kitchen. Occasionally you see a chicken cabinet on Antiques' Roadshow with a screened section for the hen...roosters, maybe not....

But Serama were bred to be apartment pets in Malaysia...they are supposed to be in the house...you mean yours are outside? Quelle Horreur!

I will be bringing my current outside Serama inside as soon as the weather changes...or as my DH so enthusiastically puts it, "When H_ll freezes over."

MichaelZ, I don't know that Sonny Terry/Brownie McGee tune but I'll bet my DH does. He ran the folk show for WXPN in the sixties when he was in college, and we used to get into all the folk venues to tape performances. Those were the days!

I did some late night research this weekend. I stayed up late and did indeed hear another rooster crowing off in the distance. Mine appeares to have gotten bored with the whole 24/7 crowing thing as he went to roost, exhausted Friday night and I haven't heard him crowing late at night since.

Saturday morning I went for an early morning drive trying to find this other rooster off in the distance (I had to go grocery shopping anyway). I think I did find him at a house about a mile away. All the chickens and roosters were out running free. It didn't look as if they had much of a coop as they had nesting boxes lined up against the outside of the garage. What with the coyotes, bobcats, and racoons in the area I figure that this rooster won't last long. The coyotes have been very loud these past few nights. Maybe that also contributed to my rooster deciding that discression is the better part of valor.

Anyway, thanks the valuable input and the giggles!

Hi Catman: No kidding, I had heard of folks who diaper their chickens and keep them in the house. When I told my wife about it she looked at me like "Don't even go there" I even told her about my crazy friend Catscan keeping chickens in the house and she said "You just need not to be like your friend" My wife is a home grown terrorist.
