Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Sage

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

What do you grow that grows best?
Also do you use any of the above for cooking?
Where is the best place to get herbs?
Do you plant in containers or ground?

I am going to plant the above and need to decide what I really want.

Well I would plant all of them in the ground Except for the rosemary not sure is it is hardy there I grew it outdoors in pensacola and it grew all year there. I would see if it is hardy in zone 7a.

I'm in 8A don't know how to change it but it only got below 32 1 night last year and it was 25.
A lot of people have Rosemary here so I know it grows year round.
Most of them have the trailing kind.

Plant the rosemary in ground ~ 8a will be fine for it. Oregano will do fine in ground also. Sage & thyme are short lived under my care... lol

Oh thought you were in 7a sorry

It's pretty easy...

Arroyo City, TX(Zone 9b)

Now in 9b I can't speak to the chill of 8a but, For Sage and thyme and even oragano they seem to enjoy a little shade during the highest afternoon sun during July and August when the humidity is high. I believe NC is like here and it is always high.

Hope this helps a little...

Definitely grow all those herbs and use them in your cooking! In May, there are a couple herb festivals in NC. One in Wake Forest and one in Asheville. I don't know where you are in NC. I've not been (I'm in NY state), but have drooled over the on-line photos. Lots of plants for sale. Google NC Herb Fest and see what you get.

I think all the herbs are very useful in cooking.
I grow them all, although rosemary is not hardy for me. I grow the upright form then shape it and put it in a pot late fall for the front entrance, it lasts till after Christmas then I strip all the leaves to save and share.
I have had the same sage for 9+ years / a no care type of plant.
Oregano is a must for Italian cooking/ one small plant will spread and give more than one family can use.
I have several types of thyme , but harvest only one for use. I am sure the others can be used ,but I just use the one, the rest are just pretty and smell great.
I must say you have picked the herbs I use the most . If you have room for one more I would add chives, I find it very useful in many things.
