My roo doesn't seem to be servicing my hens any more unless its in the wee hours of the morning. I remember his frequency used to be almost annoying as my boys thought he was beating up their poor hens. He is still being a good man looking after his ladys but it has been about 5 days since Ive seen him even try to mount a hen. They are molting would that be a reason?? I guess I should also add that they are all still pretty young about 8 months old.
The hens don't seem to be laying much either I used to get an egg from each hen (5) but now Im lucky if I get 1 or 2 a day. All this has happened in the last 2 weeks. It seems so sudden Im kind of worried they may be sick??
Gosh this seems like such a stilly thing to ask about but I guess if I don't ask Ill never know hehe!
Rooster not feeling so sexy?
hmm not sure why he is not going after the ladies, maybe it is the molting. The hens not laying is normal when they are molting. A little added protein may help that.
how may roosters do you have and also how many hens? He may just be tired... No joke...
Sue
I have 5 hens and one rooster. I have given then some more protein in the last few days so that will hopefully help.
I was mixing up some suet (sp?) for my wild birds last night and was wondering if I could give it to the chickens too? My only thought was that it would be too much fat. Do any of you know?
I use oats, cornmeal, crushed up bran cereal, ground kitty food, wheat flour, raisins, lard and peanut butter
I use to have chickens... We did limit the fat on meats but what ever we had left over from dinner the chickens ate... Now mind you we did feed them chicken food and also corn... Make sure you rooster does not have the runs.. look at vent hole to see if it is messy.... Our birds loved chicken and turkey the best... I lied to them and told them it was not that so they did not think they were eating there kin...LOL
Hugs,
sue
