Question about lighting and a plant

Chicago, IL

I first wanted to say that I have several babies from some of the leaves some of you kind people sent to me a couple months ago. I am thrilled.

I also wanted to ask two questions but maybe should only ask one per thread so as to now confuse anyone.

One of the young plants I was given is growing nicely but it's reaching for the sky. I thought that meant more light, so I moved it into closer to the sunny window. I think it's gotten worse it's as if it's covering or shading the crown of the plant. The crown is very crowded and tight. Oh, the plant is Emerald Love.

Do some plants maybe do the reaching thing when they are protecting themselves from too much light? It's in my only window which is a south west exposure and it seems worse now. I just moved it to the little light stand I have but am not sure that is the right thing either.

I was told by Teazviolets on ebay that often when they are reaching high and curving upward, it is too much light.?????????

Anna,
In the summer a southwest exposure would be too strong for AVS in Chicago, unless the window is shaded by trees or you have them a distance away from the window.East is much better. In the fall and winter when the sun is not so strong it works better.

Not that I would disagree w/Teaz on much, on this, though . . . it says in the Growing to Show book, under "not enough light": Rather than lying flat, petioles and leaves will start reaching for the light. This is just one 'symptom' of not enough light . . . others are listed. I would rephrase that to say "not enough of the right light".

I have two standards....almost the same size, one's leaves are up, up and the other ones leaves are lying down nicely....same spot..side by side..........same light..etc...and so it goes with my other plants, here and there one is like 'reaching'....I can't figure it out but they all are doing super....so many have buds! but only one is open and blooming it's head off!! Keeps going and going.............

Gessie, the ones you sent me have buds, too...........everything looks so healthy!

:) I have given some of my rooted leaves to a neighbor, I had too many. I am going to have to limit my 'garden'! small room....for Violets, etc...which will be o.k....

wish I had just miniatures, but I love the blooming standards, too!

I am the same way, bbon!!! I love all sizes!!! None of us has room I don't think (smiling)
