Want to Build Terrarium- Need Your Ideas

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I've always wanted to do this, but never did for one reason or another. I have a large glass cookie jar that I bought from Wal-mart. I have charcoal, soilless mix and some small plants. I'm missing pebbles or marbles and flowering small plants. I want it to look pretty, complete with a little figurine of some sort. So,

1.) Would go with smooth pebbles or colored marbles to put on the bottom?

2.) What mini AV(s) is the most prolific bloomer? I don't care about color of bloom or variegation of leaf.

3.) Would you add a mini-sinn too? It would add variety to the type of flowers in the terrarium.

4.) What kind of ferns are slowest and lowest growing?

5.) What kind of figurines?

Thanks for any input!

I have quite a few terrariums. Adding fairies brings a really magical touch. This is a Cleopatra Epicia. Cleopatras and Ember Lace episcia's LOVE to be in a big terrarium.

This is a darling terrarium. Episcia's do well in them. I use spagnum on most of them.

Sally is the right one to answer your questions. Everything she touches turns to perfection! She has the gift! I could look at her pics all day long. Love going over to the other forum and look for her posts!

Connie, that is very sweet. I have been sick for five months, so I have not had any fun with my violets. Hubby brought them to my moms where mom was taking care of me and then he brought them all here, to our new house in Katy. After all that, they look better than ever! The terrariums too!

I hope I can start taking photos again soon! I do love terrariums.

Here is one of the fairy pics I love, took this last spring.

So sorry you have been sick! Great Mom but unbelieveable husband!!! I have finally taught mine that they are called plants and not weeds LOL! You never cease to amaze me. You are a very talented lady! I hope you can start taking more pics too. They make me smile and say Ooohhhh and Aaaahhhh out loud :) Please get to feeling better.

Jim, thank you for the ideas! Question: why wouldn't you use an AV? Why a trailer as a opposed to a mini? Pink bells sound absolutely delightful!

Sally, thank you for the wonderful pics and ideas! Do you know where I would find the figurines? I love those fairies!

Thanks again,

These little old fashioned fairies are found here. The others are flower fairies. They can be found in lots of places. Ebay, and if you google, you can find them.
