Hi all:
I recently ordered another plant of Aglaia odorata to replace one I had years ago that unexpectedly died. I remembered it being easy growing (until its sudden death) and fragrant, with a delicate, sweet, elusive lemony scent that would take you by surprise when you least expected it. To my nose, it was a unique perfume that was not mimicked by any other flower or plant that I know of.
This time I want to make sure I do everything right to keep it happy, healthy and productive for years to come.
So, for those of you who have been growing it for a while, what can you tell me about its likes and dislikes? Any advice or secrets you care to divulge? Any quirks that need to be addressed?
Also, out of curiosity, where do you rank this species among your other fragrant plants? Near the top, or closer to the bottom, and why? I love hearing how other gardeners perceive some of my favorites.
Good gardening to all of you,
Ispahan
Tell me about Aglaia odorata
Ispahan - only had mine since June. Kevin was kind enough to give me one. Hopefully he'll poke in here and help you w/the plants likes and dislikes. I did enjoy mine while in bloom but I tend to favor the spicier scents (jasmines, gardenias, brunfelsias, ohhh least I forget the Brunfelsia longiflora) so this particular plant would be more toward middle range. She seems like an easy enough plant...but this will be my first year over wintering her...so we'll see how she does.
Well, they like bright like and would prefer some direct sunlight. Watch that they are not sitting in standing water, so they don't rot.
Beware of sticking it outside on a warm day; if a front comes through and the temps drop.......Where you live, if it's below 45 deg & with wind, I wouldn't stick it outside.
It gets to maybe 30 deg here in Sarasota a few times per year. Saw some lose branches from wind chill injury.
Chantell, I believe that was a dwarf one I gave you.
