Does anyone know if they are poisonous to livestock? I live in the country and have acreage. I want to plant several as a screen on our back fence. Our neighbors, across the fence, have cattle and horses. I don't want to endanger them..
Banana Trees?
I don't think they will hurt livestock, but not a good choice for a yearround live fence. they will die to the ground in winter so will not provide desired screening at that time of yr.
Thanks Vossner,
I think that will actually serve my purpose well. We don't dislike our neighbors and there is nothing back there unpleasant to look at.. I just thought I would like the look of the banana trees back there along the fence.
then it sounds like a perfect choice.
Banana leaves are used as wrappers for food in some places. They're also used to wrap food while it's being cooked. I don't know whether livestock would eat it but I doubt it would do them any harm.
That is good information TropicBreeze. Thank you.
DH pot belly pig ate my bananas last year and it sure didn't kill her
Well then, that is all settled. Thanks.. I will plant some out there and see what becomes of it. Sounds to me that the cattle may much on my trees... : )
If you like the trees, don't plant them too close to the fence.
Are you disappointed, dylan?
My neighbor's horses eat any of my bananas that they can reach.
No bananas are poisonous.
Plant them far enough from the fence, so the animals can't reach them.
Gotcha, Will do. I don't want to go thru the hassle of planting that many trees then have the livestock eat them to the ground. I have envisioned them sticking their heads thru the fence to eat the stalk all the way down.. lol
Happy 1
Yes somewhat. She has eaten so many of my plants it is not funny. Passionflowers seem to be a favorite also. Thank goodness they recovered pretty well.
Electric fence. Our neighbours cattle don't eat our passionfruit growing on all our fences surrounding our house.
