flower coming

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I got this as a cutting last year. Look what I found today! The name is 'strictum"? I think thats right. It's in the same pot with another cutting call Grace Ann

Great!!!!! I think that one is a night bloomer, but I may be wrong.. And I think the Grace Ann is a day bloomer.

Is that what an E strictum bloom looks like? It looks very non bloom like to me, more like a vegetative shoot.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

That looks like a flower bud to me.

It may very well be. This is the first time I've seen this on this cutting I was given. I'll check it when I get home to see what stage it's in now. It may even be labled wrong. I don't know.

It does not mater what the label says-a flower is always great

The only reason I questioned it, was I get a good number of cylindrical shoots off Epi cuttings when they are first planted. This one also appears to be out of scale with the size of a normal epi flower. The bud you show Sandy appears to be normal, while the strictum bud appears to be very elongated, which I have not seen on Epis before.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

It is a species, plus there is some number of different forms.
Here is my Epi Oxy bud.

After looking a pictures of E strictum (which has an outrageous flower) it appears that it may be properly scaled for this flower. I will rest my discussion of this, and wait to see what happens.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

well I hope it waits until I can get back on here to bloom. I may not be able to get on here, any way the doctor say I will not be able to get onto the computer for 2 weeks after my surgery tomorrow.

Bummer. That sounds like a real drag, Sandy. Take care.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Put it off to long, poor plants have suffered this year. Besides I want my DM too have her knees operated on so I have to get this done first. LOL

Absolutely a strictum flower, you lucky dog! I keep learning all the time. What a fine treat! I have a strictum cutting that may one day show a bud, as it is moving very slowly at this growth thing.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks AnalogDog. I am tickled pink! I will properly tag her as her name is acutally written on the cutting with a Sharpie I think. Do the flowers on the Grace Ann look similar?

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't know about named hybrids, but strictum is the oddity with such fine petals. I am not sure if it has been hybridized into other plants.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Ok thanks. I didn't know I had a special one. I did google Grace Ann. Sure would like to see a red or hot pink bloom that big.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Tell me about it. I have about a dozen cuttings all rooted, some down right respectable in size, but nothing yet with a bloom. One is oxypetalum, one is strictum, and the others are hybrids that I can't pin down.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Good morning Congratulation. Glad I stopped in this morning. talk to y'all in a few days I hope.

Analog I have a lot of cuttings that I am waiting on. hoping for next year. LOL

Put this in PF for E strictum, then tell us and we can vote for it as bloom of the day!

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I will do that tonight AnalogDog. Think I'll use the last pic posted. Thanks!

Common Name - Orchid Cactus?

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Sandy, glad that all went well. Get well soon. Will be waiting for your advice, photos of sweet Andre and blooms in the future.
Take care.

Hey! My picture has been posted over in the "pics recently added" spot! How cool!

(Zone 1)

Gee, I am so behind, I somehow stopped watching these Orchid Cactus threads. I really shouldn't play around with my computer settings because I always mess things up!

pdoyle: Wow! Your Epi. hookeri is beautiful! I have one that I received as a teeny plant from some elderly friends back @ 1976 and I've only seen it bloom twice in all these years! My plant is so large that it stays out under a tree in the backyard and I didn't know a thing about them until joining DG and found out it's a night bloomer!

I didn't see your pictures in PF so I really hope you will consider uploading a couple of them:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2100/

My E. hookeri and also a large E. oxypetalum are out in the yard covered with blankets because we are predicted to get down to 36º here tonight. Brrr!

Hey wren! How are you doing? I've been missing in action from the Orchid Cactus forum for awhile ... got to remember to "watch" this forum! How's your shoulder doing? I sure hope you have recuperated well. How's that cutie pup of yours? I bet he's enjoying the cooler temp's! I also hope your Epi's are recuperating from this past summer. Did you ever get your Epi house completed? I still have a table with a few small noids that the squirrels didn't destroy! Arrgh ... those little furry critters are cute but so destructive!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and many Blessings in the coming new year!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi I am falling apart. Shoulder is so so. Having a new problem with it. And now I have a bad case of tendinitis in my right ankle.

We have the sides and back on the shade house. The front will be just shade cloth and we will fix the roof so a couple of panels can be lifted to let out the heat.

I lost a number of Epis but hope I can save most of them. Will be getting misting fans for next summer.

The brat is being a brat. LOL

What a great Christmas card! Andre is one of the most beautiful canines I've ever seen! I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday ... be careful with that shoulder. Oooh, and tendonitis in the ankle? I've had tendonitis but never in the ankle ... that's got to be a pain, making it very difficult to get around! Take care of yourself, get rest ... spring isn't too far away. ^_^

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks I have to drive to Atlanta for Christmas. Not fun at all.

I have found a yard guy that does know something about plants and will listen to what I want.

Oh, that is a long drive! I went to Marietta (NW of Atlanta) the week before Thanksgiving to visit my sister. I flew up but my husband drove up Thanksgiving morning and we drove back together the next day .... I am not a good car traveler, all the traffic makes me a nervous wreck!

Have a safe journey and a wonderful holiday!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thank you, hope everyone has happy holidays and a safe one.

Oh the brat is staying in the kennel-he loves going there.
