I just stuck the daffodils in the fridge (along with the tulips) to wait for planting time because I got them pretty early. I'm reading now that this was not good for them -- that they will bloom too early on short stems because they think winter is over. ( or some such daffodil reasoning)
Does anyone have any experience with this? Did your refrigerated daffodils and narcissus perform really badly? If so, is there any way to mitigate the damage -- such as planting them later than normal?
Any advice will be so appreciated.
I think it was a mistake to refrigerate some daffodils.
P. S. Yes, it turned out to be a huge mistake to have refrigerated the daffodils. The worst part was that the little refrigerator was set too cold, and the daffodils got nipped. Mushy and ruined! I'm chalking it up to experience (ouch!!!) , and I'll never do that again.
Sorry about your bulbs. I never pre-chill my daffs. I have never tried anything other than species tulips here because it is so hot.
Thanks for the sympathy. I needed that -- for my dumb mistake! ha. My erroneous thinking was that they didn't need the chill, but it wouldn't hurt anything to keep them there. Wiser now.
I got a few of the Lady tulipa Clusiana to try. My problem with those is that I don't have a spot that stays dry through the winter, unless I grow them in a pot. I probably should do that.
I have not had much luck with them and will see if any of the species return this winter. My first daffs were refrigerated too and they did the same as yours so do not feel alone :o)
