Here is my lone spinach, which I'm wondering if the red mulch covers had anything to do with this mishap? And if they don't shape up soon, they will be replaced with strawberries I hope. I'm going to the farm the first of the week since they don't answer their phone none, hoping to find someone and make a deal about the strawberry plants.

Now for my beets, I have them in smart pots and guess the tops will be my spinach instead of the spinach this year, when do I pick the leaves?

This is onions and lots of them, I was told that if I added just a itty bitty spoon of 32-0-0 to the side of the plants I would have huge bulbs, then I read somewhere that it does not make big bulbs, anyone know for sure?

Joy looks to me like your lettuce is bolting. Probably should have harvested it sooner.

All your stuff looks good. Looks like you will have stop leaning on that " I'm just a beginner " thing. (smile)

Jerry: EEks, can I stop the bolting process? It hasn't produced the first head yet and just planted it last month??? Nope, still a beginner; but have decided I like mater gardening the best. LOL

Everything looks good! Especially your Broccoli and Cauliflower. They're getting big fast! I'm scared my head lettuce might bolt as well. We've had temps in the high 70's all week. So far so good though.

Ray: So what should I do? Should I go ahead and cut the lettuce off the stem and give some to my sister so we can all have salads or what? Will it grow back if I do that? I know the romaine will but what about the iceberg?
Thanks, the cauliflower and broccoli are getting pretty chewed up, I need to spray again but it must stop raining first for me to do that. LOL

Sadly Joy, from what I have read, bolted lettuce taste awful. I don't know anything about it and just have to go on what I googled. Hopefully somebody that has experienced it will chime in. Here's a link http://www.essortment.com/all/lettucediseases_ring.htm Sounds like you should dump them and start again once you get cooler temps. I say cut a few leaves off and taste it first though.

Instead of spraying, try to dust with BT. It's worked great for me so far.

It was suggested by an expert gardener that I trust very much, he has had lots of education and experience in this area of the country, so, I will try this spinosad and permethian and see how it does, it sure was expensive though. The spinosad treats for pests such as cabbage loopers, diamond back moth, imported cabbage worm, leafminers and worms (catepillars), it also treats for thrips, colorado potato beetle, fruit flies, japanese beetles, army worms and leafrollers. The other is a spectrum insecticide, fungicide and miticide that controls insects, diseases and mites. The insects it treats for is aphids, spider mites, scale, mealybugs, white flies, beetles, loopers, leafminers, leafrollers, armyworms, webworms, weevils, tent catepillars, leaf hoppers, cabbage worms, stink bugs, thrips, lace bugs, boxelder bugs and grass hoppers. The latter is usually used for fruit trees but is especially good in this area. These two products come highly recommended by our neighbors in Mississippi.

So; time will tell if they work or not, it seems to have a whole spectrum of bugs it will elimate for me. I have special instructions where I can mix both in my sprayer and mix with warm water and then pump and spray either in the early morning hours or late evening hours. It can be used once a week if I feel necessary and still not harm my plants.

I have Dipel dust which I bought for the horned catepillar and have Seven Spray also. I'm hoping one day to be able to go with the Dr Bonner peppermint liquid soap, warm water, Tobasco, garlic and do it as needed. But for now gotta try something a little bit stronger.

Oh yuch, this lettuce tastes terrible, I'm not sure even the wascally wabbit will eat this stuff, Joyce throwing it over the fence. It looks like it has affected my broccoli and/or cauliflower too; but not my leaf lettuce yet. So much for iceberg lettuce ya'll. Looks like these EBs are tomato EBs and that is about it, hey?
