Utttt Ohhhh .....Here I go with my 2 cents. Frost will not kill your Hosta. This plant in my opinion is almost impossible to kill. Offsets survive better then seedlings and will bloom a lot sooner. Also if you're worried about them dying (which I have NEVER seen) don't plant them in dry, extremely hot, or sunny locations. Then they will never be pretty for you. The most beautiful Hosta grow in slightly moist and shadded locations.

What kind are you looking 4?

Well gosh Kim .. i was sent 10 offsets from one person as well as divisions from another and seedlings .. all but 2 off the offsets are dead .. and I mean black and slimy dead, not dormant .. the divisions and seedlings are doing very well, even with rough treatment .. half the people are telling me hosta is indestructible and the other half disagrees. Personally with my very limited experience, I want what has worked so far with me. Perhaps when I get more experience I'll be able to tell what I might have done wrong with the dead ones .. though considering the quality, lack of roots and condition they arrived and my experience with plants in general, I don't think it was me. I've even installed an irrigation system because the area where they are, tends to be on the dry side. So what I gather from your post, hosta are evergreen. Even hard freezes won't knock them down into dormancy?

Cathy, I'd like some that are ok with direct sun for about an hour in the afternoon otherwise they will be in bright shade for most of the day. I've filled the area that stays in deep shade to light shade and do not really care what kind they are .. I just need something to fill a terribly neglected bed on the side of my house.

Wow! sounds like you got some crapy plants! geez black and slimy dead...shame. Ohhhh Noooo Hosta definitely go dormant around here. I mean totally gone. But they come back with Joy every year. How about I send you some of a very nice heirloom type with the wonderful smelling large white blooms? It's my favorite(plantaginea). I hear this one can take full sun..but don't know as I have never planted it in sun. I would usually just cut the tops off and send roots but in this case I will send the plant "As is" so you can get a feel of what you are working with. These are plants I wanted to move and dug, cut them to root, and are now back in business! WHAT YA THINK? And as far as itty bitty pieces...I have one that is a doll. It grows very low, stays small, small leaves, and has pretty blooms (variegated) Don't know the name. But I want to send you a piece.

Ohhh I forgot to add..They go dormant for me after it snows but never before it snows.

Mine go dormant, but usually later in the winter.
It has to get nice and cold first.

They come up every year without fail.

Kim thanks for the offer, but I'm putting hosta in this bed, just to have something better to look at than bare dirt and a wall. I haven't done anything to this side of the house as of yet .. it's in the back of my mind, but I've got so much other stuff to do that has a higher priority at the moment, I just want to get it planted asap so the roots have time to settle before the first really hard freeze .. it's in a protected place against a brick wall.

Perhaps in the future when I have more time to take care of it, I'll get really serious about hosta .. it's beautiful and I had no clue there were so many cultivars .. but for now, I'm in the learning mode.

Ummmm now I'm confused...LOL! So you don't want Hosta? You said, "But I'm putting hosta in this bed" This is Hosta I'm offering...I missed something? Or you have all you need now?

1. Hosta plantaginea
2. The one pictured below (long lost the cultivar name) purple flowers
3. Variegated dwarf one (long lost the cultivar name) It's really cute
