Starting a Bonsai

Chillicothe, IL(Zone 6a)

I would like to start growing my own Bonsai. I have very small Crepe Myrtle starts and would like to make them into Bonsai but I dont know where or how to start. What do I do first? How do I pot it and what materials do I need? Will Crepe Myrtle make a good Bonsai? I also have an older Azalea that I would like to Bonsai. Right now it is growing outside but I do not like where it is or how it is growing there, so I was thinking of making it into Bonsai. Where do I start? Any help is appreciated.

Get some Good books on Bonsai
That will help.

Has anyone here tried ther kitty litter for soil? I would be interested in how that went. If you could only have one book on Bonsai, what book would you buy? I am on a fixed income and cannot afford to go buy a bunch of books, but I might be able to get one. I have a load of information off the internet.

I know THAT feeling as I am too.
That was going to be my next suggestion, to"go on the internet"
Don't be afraid to try things on your own.
sorry I can't help you more. Maybe someone will see this that will.

The beginner article I liked best on the web was this:

Thank you for the link.

I read a book review in Bonsai Today for Pocket Bonsai by David Prescott. The price is only $15 and the review was very favorable. As it happens, I have this book, and I found it very useful. The internet can be disjointed, with links all over the place, and a good basic book is very handy.

The kitty liter that they make now is soluable; or at least the kind I got was.
it gets mussie. I didn't like it at all.

I've been using Floor-Dry sold at NAPA auto parts store very cheaply. It is freshwater diatomaceous earth. I have used diatomaceous earth that I get at garden centers as a non-toxic way to kill aphids and ants, but that stuff is very fine. The stuff NAPA sells is larger particles, a few millimeters, very easy to handle. I put a bunch in a bucket and washed it off with a hose, then mixed into my potting soil to improve drainage for bonsai and Japanese maples. Very happy with it so far.

That sounds like what I was looking for, Thanks.

Granite, do they sell that at other auto places, we do not have a Napa auto parts? I appreciate any help. we have O'Rielly and Advanced Auto Parts.

All I can think of is to go in and ask for a product for mopping up oil spills--that is why NAPA sells this. Then once you can see the bag, it will say diatomaceaous earth in the fine print if that is what it is. Good luck.

Thanks Granite. I will be checking it out. I have to go pick out a small pot too so I will have some shopping to do.
