This photo is of my friend's Lavender which she got this summer. It is the most beautiful plant I have seen, and I want some like it (Notice the difference between it (front) and the other Lavender in back.) The flowers are very pale in color, and the plant's overall shape is so nice. I have fallen in love with Lavenders since moving here to the Pacific NW 2 years ago, and plan to have a big collection.
Lavender info,please
Get a cutting. Most lavenders are started from cuttings tand is fast and accurate method to propagate lavenders, it will produce a plant similar to the mother plant.
Good luck!
Would now be a good time to take cuttings? If not, when? Would they be stuck in sand with bottom heat?
The best time is spring and summer, when the plant is at their best growth period, look for shoots with new growth, a cutting of lavender should be 3 to 5 inches long.
Find a bump on the stem, that is called a node and with a sharp pruning tool cut just below the node, if you have rooting powder you can dip the cutting into it and put it in a pot with good moist soil, bury the cutting about 1 inch in the soil and pat down the soil. Do make few cuttings in the same pot.
Find sunny location and keep the pot moist. You can put clear plastic bag over the top making suit is loose so that air can circulate, if it looks too wet, uncover the pot to allow it to dry out.
Wait until you see new growth and then you can transplant.
Hope is clear
Thanks for the info- I guess I am too late for this year, but I may try anyway! I am adventurous, and I like to try things against the rules!
Go for it! I'd try too.
If it doesn't work , you knew that ..... but if it does: Wonderful surprise!!!
hi joparrott ask around i think you will find you can kill it with love. i put out four kinds. 2 died . the one that did best looks like your pic . i made a mound of the worst soil and put it at the top . i dont think it likes water or fert. ck me out on this . if you put 4 kinds they will all look alike. ck this all out. jlmcv45 ps you can pull a limb over cover it with dirt and it will root .cut it off sit it out. jim ck all this out jim
Jim, I think you're right, especially with the good drainage you provided by planting it in a mound.
My 4 cuttings did not root-they just sat there and eventually browned- I will try something else whan the plant starts growing in the spring. The problem is that the plant is a nice shape and I don't think she wants it cut up!
Understandable, but she will probably get enough new growth by early summer that it won't be an issue. Take it from the inside of the plant where it won't show much and cut it low so if it branches it will still be fairly well disguised.
Should we prune lavender?
I raked the leaves away from a good size plant today but some of it looks 'leggy' and some is dead. I wondered if we could/should trim it back.
any thoughts?
The long flower stems should be harvested by cutting them close to the woody part of the plant. A light pruning of the foliage after flowering is also recommended. The plants do not take kindly to being pruned back into old wood.
thank you.
