Anyone have one, or thoughts on one? I was thinking about the idea of black water filled tubs to help heat the GH in the winter, then saw these large 110 gallon oval tubs at tractor supply today, and thought, why not move the fish and water plants to that inside the GH.
Anyone tried this? What would be some pros/cons you can think of?
Fish Pond in Greenhouse?
I've both seen and experienced having fish ponds in a greenhouse before. It works out very well for both the fish and the plants. Depending on the temperature of the greenhouse or sunroom, you can overwinter tropicals such as lilies, water lettuce, etc. and the fish will enjoy it too. The fish pond is a super source of "fertilizer included" water for the greenhouse plants! One thing you should provide is some sort of aeration for the fish though, both for their health and for keeping the water from getting stagnant. Filtration is not absolutely necessary unless there is a large number of fish. Good luck!
I would definitely have aeration; I have enough spitting turtles, frogs, birds, etc. for my other pond set-up. I wonder if the water would stay warm enough as is, or if it will hurt to keep the heater in it that I bought for my outdoor pond.
I'm pulling up my outdoor ponds, and will be putting in one large pond next spring. I want to shut down the outside operations and move my lotus, water lilies, elephant ears, etc into the GH pond. Is it likely they'll stay green/living in there, or will they still go dormant for the winter?
I think it'd depend on the water temperatures. I read somewhere that the water has to be above 65º to keep tropicals from going dormant. You could probably Google for more exact information. Of course, it wouldn't hurt them to let them rest for the winter either. Let us know how it works out for you.
