Hibiscus Schizopetalus

Chadds Ford, PA(Zone 6b)

Every year I cannot wait for this hibiscus to bloom. This year I had to take it in because of the cold. But it is worth the trouble, don't you think?
I trained it as a standard. It always looks scrawny. Would anybody have some advice about its culture. Of all my hibiscus, it is the hardest to grow!

Yes, Villiers, it is worth the trouble. I'm sure Jon, Robert, Patrick or Dee can help you with its culture. Would love to see the whole plant as a standard. What size is the bloom? It looks so delicate & fragile. Very, very pretty. Thanks for sharing with us.

Hey Villier I love the way the petals on the bloom look, it's awesome the way they are are divided at the edge. How much direct sunlight does it receive and do you fertilize it, maybe you need to trim it back so it will grow more bushier. Would Like to cross pollinate that one with some of my other hibs to see if I could get a different color hib with its bloom characteristic I would love to see photo of the whole plant.

We've got one that's going great guns in Vieques, and I've got several more rooted and coming along. They get full sun. I irrigate just enough to make sure they don't dry out (our climate here is actually semi-arid desert). THe main plant is splayed on one of our lattice "billboards".

Here's a picture of one --sorry, I'm not in Vieques right now, so I can't prove what my guest there have said, that the bush is now full of blooms.

JP, that is a beautiful bloom! Your bush seems a lot healthier than mine.
The leaves are small and come right out of the main branches and trunk, somewhat closer together than the other hibiscus I have. I wonder if they can be crosspollinated with other hibiscus like Wilfred would like to do?

Yes, they grow fast! I just cut it back severely to bring more blooms next year. This year I only had three, but the weather was cooler than normal.

I've had this hibiscus for years - I keep it trimmed to about 4' - takes up a lot room in the greenhouse, but worth it, for sure. A friend took some cuttings this summer and they rooted for him....when I got my plant, it was considered unusual, hard to find - now I see it available on some online nurseries.

I have a really big one that I have taken cutting from. I now have 8 'babies' that are about 12" tall. They all look really good.

You have to wait for blooms though. When I made my pruning this year, I didn't realize the thing was covered with buds. I cut them all off. Even despite that, the cuttings bloomed!! so all was not lost. I will know better next year and won't do that again. Wouldn't that have been beautiful with a bunch of blooms at once?

Would love to see that. Glad you can still enjoy your blooms.
