I have no business on eBay buying plants!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

So, why am I doing just that? I need some addictions counseling.....badly.
I'm doomed.......

Please help me.

Please.

(Zone 1)

Uh oh ... sounds like someone needs GA (Gesneriad's Anonymous.) ^_^

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Maybe she could accompany Gail to her meetings! ^_^

What plants are you purchasing/bidding on?

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Yeah, I could use some support. Gail would be just the one! LOL

(sheepishly says: "David Thompson plants). :) OMG!

Highland, IL

You are with a bunch of enablers!! TRUST ME!!!!

hhahahahaha Laura H

Atco, NJ

Laura, there are no enablers here. Just people who love plants and are willing to share. We share information, plants, and good sources for more plants. Oh, and did I mention that we love to trade leaves which give us more plants. Yes, more plants that we can "share" with others. No enablers here, Laura. None at all.

me too

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

maybe someone will outbid me and I won't spend any money at all. LOL

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Good thing Gail's computer is in the shop . . . ^_^

Atco, NJ

GrowHappy,

Which ones are you bidding on? I was looking at a few of them, but I will not bid against you. I really don't need anything because I'm getting short on space. Sometimes it's just too tempting though. Gail recommended this seller and that's the only reason I even looked at his plants.

Pat

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Based on my experience, David has multiples of each plant, and will give you a "second chance offer" for your bid price after the auction ends if you were outbid. So bid early, the lowest price, and don't rebid if someone outbids you- you'll still probably get it at your bid price!

Since I know all about this, perhaps I need a GA meeting too, lol:)

Pat your crakin me up!!!

ok, maybe i'm out of it on the ebay thing, what is the store?? you know now i gotta look!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here you go, Laura: http://shop.ebay.com/plant_maniac/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

David is a hybridizer, so his plants are top notch.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

His plants are always great!! You will need to repot or adjust to his soil mix though.

Atco, NJ

So Laura, before it gets too cold to safely ship leaves, where is that updated wish list you were working on?

Pat

Highland, IL

Pat, didn't I send you one??? I know I looked at pictures of your list! Geez, loosin my mind! lOL

I have him down as a favorite seller, duhhhhh yet again

lbrabec- why do you say that we need to repot or adjust his soil- it feels good and light.

I have some plants that I ordered last week being shipped this week- 6 streps and 2 min av's- very excited! Then, no more plants till Spring! (just leaves...LOL)

Williston, ND

David grows his in a greenhouse so he can get away with a heaver mix, people like us that grow indoors need a light mix as
a lot of plants do poorly in straight peat mix,if grown indoors

JIM

I got most of the plants I bid on and those that I didn't win, I got second chance offers. One strep, 'Stoplight', I decided not to get at t his time. It is beautiful though! I had to have that Russian AV Supernature, so I got my second chance on that one. Will post pics when I get my plants.

Lynn, thanks for the info on his mix. No heavy mixes allowed here:)

I do mostly "Buy it nows" myself, unless I see something that strikes my fancy. My fancy is easily struck! LOL!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I know, it doesn't take much for me either!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Guess whose auction I have open on ebay now- I'm eyeballing this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180420496220&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I just repotted some of David's streps today- from a 2.5" pot it was hard to get much soil out- most of the pot consisted of the rootball, I did shake it off over the trash and put a bit of new soil on the bottom and sides- but the middle is still David's soil- I hope that's ok!

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

You'll get some good leaves from that grower;)

BTW, most of the ones I got from him have roots. 'Silvia' is just a show-off though. She has major roots AND babies! I just put these leaves down around 09/24 or so. Whoopeeeeee!!!!!!! I need to learn to leave them alone. Once a week or so I check the roots to see what's going on down there. LOL I'm rooting in straight perlite(a pinch of verm. in some pans) so pulling them out is very easy without causing damage to the roots. Too bad I can't do this with my violet leaves;) They are all rooted too. Yes, I did tug the leaves to see if I got resistance! What?!!!!!!! I can't help it, I'm a maniac when it comes to Gessies!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL Shanika, gently tugging on leaves is actually a good thing......It lets you know if there is anything bad going on with the root system...no resistance, once they are rooted, could mean problems!!

raisingsouls,
I think Jim already answered your question about DT'S mix,but too add too it,it can get very dry and hard, making it difficult to remoisten and after a soaking can stay too wet, especially for Streps.Growers have much different growing conditions than us average Joes.

Lynn

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I lifted up a few leaves and saw some had roots- whoopee- I was afraid I may have been doing something wrong, but the right things are happening!

Thanks, Lynn, for explaining- I hope it's ok that DT's mix is still surrounding the rootball...

Ellen

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Ellen,
Just make sure when you water to check if the rootball is still wet even if the surrounding soil is dry.Sometimes they can appear very dry,but be wet in the center.

one of drawbacks for using peat for growing medium, which most greenhouses do. It's cheap and when you're growing mass plantings like that, it comes in handy.
I'm going to remove his soil soon after I get the plants. I will have my own mix ready to go!

Williston, ND

I just figured out the link, thanks

Does anyone here have streps that BIG?

I keep seeing streps with 2-4 leaves...can't wait until mine are huge like that!!!
