Hi, I am new to DG, only been here a couple months and have enjoyed reading the posts in the Texas forum. I am slowly working on a cottage garden around our house and was wondering if anyone had any luck with any variety of yellow Buddleia? While I was on a trip to PA a couple years ago, it seemed that they were everywhere once I got east of the Mississippi. Huge plants, some seven feet tall and at least as wide. I have been looking locally ever since with no luck.

Yellow Buddleia?
Do you mean a Butterfly Bush? I'm not good with the scientific names. Anyway, if it is I have 2 of them and I have never seen this color anywhere else around here. I can't remember where I got them but I ordered four of them. Two yellow, one pink and 1 purple. The two yellow ones are the only ones that haven't died, they are huge. If I had known how big they were going to get I would have planted them some place else. Their growth habits are completely different form the "normal" colored ones and they require absolutely no care. My others died this summer because of the heat (even though I watered them) I didn't take care of the two yellows at all and they are still huge and blooming like crazy.

Yes it is also called a Butterfly bush. I have two right now, one of the dark purple ones and one that is red, white and blue. Don't know how they did that, I don't see graft marks or multiple plants but right now the white blooms are going crazy and I see a couple red ones (pink) starting. It is still in its pot because of the drought this summer. I have lost several due to drought over the last few years so I was waiting until fall to plant.
Thanks, maybe I will have to order from somewhere,
Joy
I wish I could remember where I got them. I'm going to check some of my receipts maybe I can find it. I'd never seen this color before but I didn't think much of it. Just remember that this color seems to grow really big even here not just east of the Missisippi. Maybe I can root some off of the ones I have here. I'll have to look into that.

I bought a yellow BF Bush 2 years ago from Rohde's Nursery in Garland. Just as Lisa said, it immediately grew into a monster. It's easily twice as tall and three times as wide as the Red Raspberry BF Bush planted near it. And I had to remove a Dark Knight BF Bush from the area because the yellow was hogging up all the space. The butterflies *love* this plant. I don't think you'll find a yellow in the "big box" stores, but try some of your local nurseries that offer native plants. It shouldn't be too hard to find.

Have you tried Martha's Bloomers or the Antique Rose Emporium? Or even Arbor Gate? I know that if it will grow in your area, one of them will have it.
I asked at Arbor Gate and they looked at me like I was crazy. They said there wasn't even a yellow one to their knowledge. Didn't think about Martha's, asked at the emporium and they said they occasionally get them in but they are never there when I go. Which means I spend more money on antique roses, yay.
I will have to ask at Martha's when I go to College Station next week. Thanks for the tip.
I wonder why they grow so much bigger? It has to be more then just the color that makes them different. The two I have have squeezed out many different plants. I put one near a yellow bells and they are way to close all that yellow looks strange together. If I had known how big they were going to get I would have planted then someplace else, but I thought they would have the same growing habits as all the other ones. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

i buy from this guy all the time. love his plants. they aren't big but the root systems have always been substantial. i got a recent shipment and some things appear to be going dormant but the roots........they live.
Honeycomb is really beautiful.
It lights up the garden.
You might have your soil checked for cotton root rot in the area where you plan to plant;
I lost my gorgeous (& huge) Honeycomb Buddleia/butterfly bush almost overnight when its roots reached an infected area in my ex-cottonfield garden.
Thanks for the picture. I have heard from folks who say that Honeycomb is the only one to have and from others who say Sungold is the bomb. I also appreciate the note on Spring Hill. Just received two Honeycomb from Donna Vincent at Vincent Gardens on DG. She sent two in one box for the same shipping cost so how could I refuse? Both got here in great shape and I got them potted up Saturday jsut before this big rain. So I have one to trade and one to keep. Maybe I will look into the Sungold from Spring Hill and do a comparison grow.

well now 1lisac in liberty hill texas. what you need to do is root some of those branches. it ain't like you ain't got enough. that's a big plant. and we all want one. ha how yellow is the bloom? i couldn't see the blooms on the picture.
i just got my new plants and i got a honeycomb for i think 3 bucks. it's ready to go into a quart container at least.
Mamajack-the bloom is really yellow. I have some pictures, I just have to find them. (OH NO) I'd be glad to root some I didn't realize they were hard to find. How do I root them?
Lisa
i never heard of that one. you want a honeycomb? it would be a while before i could root this one but i could get another one from ron? yeah i'd like to see the 2 together then i'll decide which is prettier. i am a yellow connoisseur.
mamajack - you have a dmail.
i didn't get a dmail from you i don't think. now i will go look at your picture.
that looks to have some orange or a golden color. right? very pretty.
Mamajack, root me one b4 your area gets a freeze, please.
The farm where I used to work, supplies ARE, Martha's, & Arbor Gate.
Another awesome yellow bloom ya'll should ck out (actually I thought you were talking about) is Madrensis. It is a salvia, believe it or not, that gets around 6' tall. One unusual characteristic about it is it's height!!!! Five foot plus tall. And it's stems. They are square, not rounded, Also, a fall bloomer!
There are only 2 yellow salvia's. Madrensis & one in Japan!!!
Going to have to ck out Spring Hill Nursery!!!
:~)
Smockette-How do you root them? Mine go strong even through winter. They don't act like anyother butterfly bush I have ever had.
Lisa
smockette long time no see. mine is a very small plant yet. next year i could root you one. if you really want one this year go look at my ebay guy to see if he has any left.
1lisa what do you mean? are you saying your kind is evergreen?
Oh Good Lord, I don't know. I think so I don't remember if there is a time it doesn't have leaves. It doesn't die back that I know. I actually have 2 of them. I THINK they even have flowers on and off all the time. The only time it got brown leaves was this summer when it was so hot. I thought it didn't get cold enough here.
Lisa
I guess I'd just take cuttings & either try rooting them in water or dip in rootone & stick in some moist soil.
Mamajack, next yr will be fine no rush. I now have 80' of HH GHs. I have them broke into 3. It is just easier to cover them in the winter that way. Planning on buying plugs in the next couple of months & grow them for spring color. Have some friends that are crazy LSU fans & want everything around them purple & gold. So, I'm getting some pansies that are purple & gold.
Mainly got that much GHs b/c after Ike, the people behind me cleared their property right up to my barbed wire fence! Now, I'm looking at the back of mobile homes! Also, need protection fr the deer that have made their hwy to the lake, right thru my yard! lol
smockette, what are HHGH? My brain isn't working well today.
Hoop House/Green House
Since Woodlands Pkwy is going thru fr 2978 to 249, I didn't want to spend the $$ on a perm GH. These can be dismantled & moved when they buy me out!!!
smockette i am grrrrrrrritting my teeth imagining the clear cut land around you. i am really sorry as i know the feeling.
