Teeny tiny BeautyBerry/callicarpa dichotoma

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Saw this at Marshall Grain and kept thinking about it until I had to buy it. Now I realize it isn't American BB. Anyone have callicarpa dichotoma and what do you think?

Also saw dwarf barbados cherry . Any opinions for these plants in a mainly shade bed.
BTW, they have those adorable johnny jump ups for 69 cents

I have the Dwarf Barbados Cherry in a pot, it is very pretty, but I am afraid to plant outside for fear it wouldn't survive the winter.

Belton, TX

I have the dwarf barbados cherry, as well as the taller species, and have no problem with them in the ground all year. They are in dry shade under oaks and interplanted with beautyberry, white ruellia, and coralberry...BTW, I had the same combination up on the limestone cliffs east of Arlington about 30 years ago with no problems over the winter...of course, our weather has changed!...

That is good to hear, maybe after I propagate mine and have one in reserve I may take a chance and plant outside, how low of a temperature do you think they can take?

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

That would be a very similar combination and conditions that I have. I think if anything, the weather has warmed up, the zone changed from 7b to 8a since I have lived here (15 years) What zone is Belton?

Belton, TX

Belton is-- by the government -- listed at 8b...but the past 3 winters, I would say we are 8b/9...

When I grew this combination in Duncanville, we lived on the limestone ridgeline above the lake...the plants did very well in spite of tornado-type winds, 4 snows, and multiple ice events...one year when the cold was prolonged, the plants froze to the ground...they were back up and blooming in 2 months. I think these are a very hardy plant that could stand to be used more...I think they can take very low temps for a short time and I think they will be sustained at 25 deg for several days...at least that has been my experience here...and in Duncanville....oh, and I keep them heavily mulched with leaves...never underestimate the power of mulch!!

I love mulch too, what would we do without it?

Great info. I exchanged the BB for the dwarf Barbados Cherry today. That gives me confidence to plant it here.
