passiflora alata (Fragrant granadillo)

Austin, TX

I have a passiflora alata ("Fragrant granadilIa") I started from seed about a year ago. It now has many 12 ft long vines with luxurious growth but has not produced a single flower? Does anyone know why?

Most passiflora do not bloom until the second year. You should get blooms next summer.

Really? I got my belotti in march and it bloomed and I got my Blue Eyed Susan In September and it bloomed too....so I'm guessing they were cuttings so for them it was there second year?

Yes, the second year "rule" applies to seed grown, and some seed grown passies do bloom in the first year. Most commercially sold passies are propagated from cuttings, and the original mother plant could be many years old. I don't know if plants have a maximum age like people do--or if the ones started from cuttings have to subtract the age of their parent plant to figure their projected life span. I think one of the theories of aging is that cells divide only a certain number of times, but I don't know if this applies to both plants and animals.
