silly question

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

ok got another question... silly i know.. but the more i think about it the more curious i get.

its sorta about chickens.. not entirely.. but i think the chickens caused it.. hopefully I'm not just allergic to my chickens.

Has anyone ever had a chicken flap thier wings hard at them when they are attempting to put that shrieking, clawing, screeching chicken who thinks the world is coming to an end & you are killing them in a coop & stepped back only to notice thier arm feels like its been lite on fire? i've got huge whelps up & down my arm. At first I thought maybe the chickens got into posion up back when they were wandering the yard today & transfered it to my arm. But now I'm wondering if the wing feathers can actually sorta cut your skin if they are flapping about wildly & madly bc they think they are being killed? I've washed it idk how many times tonight & it still feels kinda like it had hundreds of little needles sticking out every time something brushes the whelps.

its not fun. now that everyone is done laughing at me.... any ideas? Could the wings actually cause abrasions?

(Zone 6b)

I'm not laughing. That hasn't happened to me yet, but it sounds like an allergic reaction. Whether it was the chicken's wings scraping you, or something bit you, I don't know.

I've had some terrible allergic reactions at times, and it's no laughing matter. For some reason what works best for me is plantain from the healthfood store, or Solarcaine from the drugstore. Absorbine Junior and Campho-phenique seem to help me too, if it's not too serious.

It kind of reminds me of a story I heard about chiggers once. I never had them I don't think, but they sound terrible.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

more of a quiet giggle...

How is your arm today? .. there really isn't anything to break skin in the wing.. sounds more like they got into something. poison ivy.. maybe fleas or chiggers.. ( it does sound like a chigger - they are ankle biters that leave a "drinking straw" behind in the skin. Although I never heard of chickens with problems with the little bugs - perhaps they got on the feathers during a dirt bath..

hard to say - never saw it happen, but I know the sight of trying to get the kind into the coop after they wiggle the wings free is pretty darn funny every time!!!

It still burns. Its not chigger like.. trust me.. chiggers think i'm the main meal for the entire summer.. those don't feel like this. Its went away a bit this morning.. so i can see a bit better. It looks like they got into poison oak.. & transferred it to me. one blasted tree with poison oak in the field & they just have to eat the bugs under that one. I think the chickens & I are going to have a talk.

oh my, are you gonna have to bleach your chickens?

Richmond, TX

If it burns, could it be nettles? Poison oak would itch wouldn't it?

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

Actually the last time i got poison oak it burned like fire for the first 24 hrs then nothing but occasionally itching for 2 weeks. Bleach won't get the oil off of which ever chicken it was on. :) so no i'm not gonna bleach the chickens. I like thier colors.. really don't want totally white chickens. Its done burning just a rash now.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I was trying to remember why I thought of washing the chickens in bleach... and then I remembered.. I saw a military video on poisen ivy & oak and it said you had 15 minutes to wash your skin after exposure.. If you wash with a clorine solution within that 15 mins you can avoid a reaction.

Soap/detergent and cool water works too.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

um.. i wouldn't advise trying it.. I tried that & i screamed so loudly they could hear me a few houses away. VERY COLD water seems to work really well.. then go swimming in a pool or a pour some salt or bleach into the bath water & soak after i've washed in cold water with lava soap or my homemade hemp oil soap. Same idea i guess but the pool water doesn't burn like the bleach. I did learn the hard way to stay away from room temp to hot water. It was th emiddle of winter & i was freezing cold so I took a hot shower. I itched like crazy till i jumped back in to an ice cold shower.

idk if i can wash it off the chickens or not. The one i suspect had it on him hasn't been making me put him in the coop lately. He's taken to sleeping in the tree again. suppose to rain next week.. maybe a mud bath will wash him clean.
