Will watermelons keep in a root cellar?

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

If yes, how long will they stay good? Does anyone know what temp and condition they store the best at?

I have about 13 of them left from my garden this year. I picked them a couple days ago and I'm not sure what to do with them.

Depend somewhat on cultivar. Most watermelons have a very short storage life. Many will get watery in the middle, others turn to mush. I have grown a few with some storage ability, mostly yellow fleshed ones like Texas Beauty which dries and gets hollow, but holds its external form and flesh next to the rind remains edible. The old King and Queen was once sold as the Christmas melon for its ability to hold in storage. Never found it to be that good at any point in its lifespan however.

Couldn't you freeze them in chunks? You wouldn't want to thaw them completely but I'll bet they'd make good snacks. I've also tried drying them. They were interesting; very sweet but with a slightly odd flavor.
