Since I have grown up in Texas I have been able to accurately predict cold winters. My birthday is on October 18th and if I have to wear a sweater before the 18th, we are in for a cold winter. I have been wearing sweaters quite a bit this year.
The Farmers Almanac predicted back in May that September would be the beginning of normal rainfall and October would be higher than normal. They also predicted snow storms in San Antonio in December/January. I didnt think that was possible after almost 70 days of 100+ but I do now.
What happened to Fall?
When I left on the first to spend a week in Vicksburg, MS it still felt like summer. I returned Thursday evening to temperatures of 59ºF. It was cold and drizzly all weekend. What happened?
Cold & drizzle from Friday through yeterday here too.. But I'll take it. Anything is better than those few months of 110F+ Heat indeces... Thought I was going to have cooked horses there for a while. yuckie hot.
Maybe this will be our winter? Wishful thinking I know but one has to be optomistic.
Cheryl
I have heard this will be a wet winter. Guess we best get used to the cold soggy feeling!
As another sign from above, I got a good pair of thermal underwear at my B-DAY party yesterday.
LOL!! They will come in handy if we do have a long cold one.
A cold, wet winter brings a glorious spring wildflower season!! We've not had a really good flush of wildflowers in a couple of years, so if this rainy weather brings on the wildflowers in the spring, I'll gladly suffer through it. Also, the lakes and aquifers need to be replenished desperately.
Stephanie....It was also announced that the City will not be cutting the right-a-ways and will go to a 28 day cycle cutting in parks, etc. This is all due to budget cuts, but I immediately thought, great!...more wildflowers can go to seed.
When given lemons make lemonade!!
Many of my fruit trees are border line "chill requirement" which means I should get more flowers/fruit in spring with extra cold this winter. OOOOOOOO! I bet some of my blueberries will really like the extra chill.
Question: Do you celebrate for a wk since you had your party on the 11th? Or was this just more convient to have the party a wk early? lol
Which ever, it doesn't matter! Hope it is a great wk for you!
:~)
My nephew has it a week early so I prefer to celebrate with him. Children know how to party.
Another good thing about the up-coming cold winter, is that it will rid us of the pesky mosquitoes that are all over the place right now! And the trees are turning colors which is a pretty sight.
My best friend's bday was the 12th...October babies seem to love a good party! At some point, she decided the entire month of October is her bday month! I'm too old for all that....and she's older than me!
