Think I'm doing it wrong!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

There are a couple of Black Beauty alocasias that were put in a pot today, inside a ceramic pot, partially filled with water. A bog? A Pond?

Whatever. I can see the plant drowning in a mosquito infested pot. Yes?

What shall I do?

Thanks.

They look fine to me. I grew mine on a plant ledge in my pond this summer with no dirt - I just put it in the few inches of water. One of the two of them rotted out a bit in the bulb but I cut it away and it was fine all summer-the plant grew.

It's not a mosquito farm?

Thanks mothermole.

Try adding mosquito dunks to the water, or add some sort of movement/aeration to the water.

What's a dunk?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

They're tablets you can put in standing water to help keep the 'squitos down. You can get them at most nurseries.

Ah, Thanks

I use tadpoles for water quality control. There's usually an abundance of them around. Are you sure those are black magic and not illustrus?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's what they came to me as. Whadda I know.

NO...NO....I mis-spoke. They are Black Beauty. Hey, it was close.

Mine are in a pond with koi fish. No mossies with fish or moving water. I also have a bog garden and in the beggining it had mosquitoes (and I used mosquito pellets-like the dunks) but frogs and toads came and I didn't need to continue with the dunks.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks kids. Off to the nursery. How about HD or Lowes?

Both have the dunks and granules....so does WalMart.
:)

Great, thanks.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

We have dozens of Water Garden Containers like yours.
It will do just fine.
But will out grow it w/in months.
Full sun this time of year.... in fact they can probaby handle it all year.
We grow 'Illustris', 'Black Magic Ruffles', 'Black Magic Runner', 'Big Dipper', 'Coffee Cups', 'Pink China',
etc in old Restaurant Iced Tea Dispensers.....

Don't waste money w/ the dunks.
Just buy the Bacillus thuringienis israelensis pellets MUCH cheaper!

BTW 'Black Beauty' is an 'Illustris'. So you are both right.
Just a darker form that was discovered a few years ago.

Hi Ric, long time no see.

Our Full Sun is way different than yours. Moved a few for an hour in the am and some fried. Not dead, but not happy either.

Now say that again. Bacill HUH? Does it have a more common name? And where would this be purchased. Remember, not everyone speaks English here I can just imagine me going into HD and asking for that baby! Right!

Ah, on the two names.
Thanks.

Hey Nancy! Long Time!

They will take full sun even down there but need to be conditioned to it.
I got some from Mau in AR....
my Big Dipper's burned for her for a bit.. after a week of conditioning they were fine.

As for the stuff..... BTI is the common term for the bacteria.
Quick Kill Mosquito Bits is one type.
Dunks for sure work they are just expensive.
The stuff we use came from HD and was in a blue shaker like Kraft Parmesian Cheese come in..lol!
Any garden shop that has water plants will have it.

You can also use Mosquito Fish or Guppies.......

AH, the ol' guppy trick.

Thanks for the info and I'll give them more sun little by little. Now is a good time of year for that.

Yep they should be Killer by Spring...... Zone Envy setting in......

Here's our newest setup for some of the EE's.....
Sadly all tucked away for Winter now.

Those are expensive pot, Ric.. not unless you have a 'source'. Yes?

Hap

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Ah Hap I was the source.
We supplied KFC w/ all their Iced Tea Dispensers.
These either came back or in damaged.
Wish I had all the damaged ones I threw away before thinking of saving them.

Check w/ local Restaurant Supply Houses.

Just curious, I'm a retired chef and thought you might be too.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Retired?
You should get a TV Show.
Retired Iron Chefs, Social Security Chefs, Senior Citizen Sous, CARP (Chefs Association of....)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

How about, 'Just Tired Chefs'?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)
