This is growing over a neighbor's fence. The leaves are dark green with dark purplish veins, and the pods are purple. I didn't catch it in bloom, but there is one bloom about to drop, looks kind of like a sweet pea flower. What is this interesting plant? I looked in my Southern Living plant guide but can't find it. I'm in Zone 8a.
vine with purple pods, sweetpea-like flowers, ID?
That is Hyacinth Bean, Lablab purpureus.

Thanks so much, X!! I've got to see if I can get some seeds, when the pods dry. Looks like fun to grow, and if the hummers love it, as the info in Plant Files suggests, then I'm all for it!!! Thanks again!
When the pods dry (onthe vine), the beans will be jet black with a white edge on one side. They are so cool looking.
Neat!!!! I'll watch for them!
