Texas Native Plant Sale in Fort Worth.
I have gone to that sale in the past but I think it was in the spring. They had alot of things for sale.
Cheryl
Did you make the sale today Cheryl? I was working at the ticket table. It was cold today and I don't think we were as busy as in years past.
I saw Glenna and her husband at the sale, and also Sheila came by to say hello, she was volunteering for the Botanic gardens and I for the native plants.
It was a good sale although not as big as other times.
Josephine.
I wish I could have gone. I'm on call this wk. I love those sales.
No the weather kept me home. I think they do one in the spring and I usually go to that one.
Cheryl
Cheryl... If I had not volunteered, it would have kept me home too!
Josephine...I didn't see Glenna (DNP) and Larry, but I saw Paige (Konkreteblond) from Burleson and a friend that worked the Tropical Butterfly Exhibit with me last time.
Something I thought was neat that happened right at the last of the day. I was checking someone's plants and there was a Monarch on one, and it was tagged!! I didn't have my camera, this pic is a previous Monarch. Anyway, the day before I was at a meeting that Gail Manning, from the BG spoke on Monarchs. I had three emerge that morning so I took them to the meeting. Afterward she said she would take them back to the Gardens to tag and release them. Since the cold spell came through they didn't go far I am sure. So I am claiming that the one I spotted was one of my hand raised ones saying "bye...I am off to Mexico"! LOL!
That is neat Sheila, I am sure it was one of yours.
I saw Paige and Sandi too, they came by to buy some plants, they are really nice and sweet girls.
This is very off topic but does anyone do mail order plants from high country gardens? They have such a great variety and many of the plants that I would like to try.
Cheryl
BTW, how do they tag butterflies?
They get kits from places like www.monarchwatch.org and record the date, sex, wild or raised, and put the sticker on the ventral side on the lower wing at the tip of the large cell. The data is sent back in and the numbers can be tracked online if found along the migration trail going to Mexico winter roosting spot.
Putting a sticker on a butterfly, now that just seems funny. Still it must yeild a lot of useful information about the species.
Cheryl
Yes, it does.
I haven't seen many monarchs since I moved here though I do see a lot of other species.
Cheryl
We have lots of monarchs at the Fielder garden, big beautiful ones, they love that Bluemist flower.
Does anyone have an ID of the begonias that were for sale at the BG?
The bottom pic is Greg's Mist flower, Eupatorium greggii. It is native, large and sprawling and blooms in the fall. The top pic is a eupatorium too. I don't know which one it is off hand. If you don't have the Greg's Mist flower you should try it. I love the bright green of the leaves and it is easy to grow. Butterflies love it too.
Cheryl
Might be this one or it could be an ageratum (sp), like the annuals they sell.

Cheryl
Dirty Thoroughwort (Eupatorium sordidum) , maybe ,but it comes back each year...atleast I don't remember planting it as an annual
The first picture is of Bluemist, Conoclinium coelestinum, formerly known as Eupatorium coelestinum.

Josephine.
I only know the plants I grow in my own little corner of the world. I am enjoying learning about new species that grow well here in TX and this site is certainly a good source for information.
On a more serious note, my new plants are not looking very lively. Hoping with some sun they will recover. Any suggestions?
Cheryl
Which plants are not looking well?
The Hibiscus, nearly all the leaves are yellow. Mt. Sage, yellow too. Nothing has put out any new leaves and some from the trade look like gonners.
Cheryl
They are going dormant now, mine are too, on top of that it has been very cloudy and cold, those plants will probably go to sleep till next spring.
I have lost a few also. The batface is a goner for sure and one other can't remember the name. Most are just looking like they are going dormant though, keeping fingers crossed. I have been careful not to leave them in full sun today since they are a bit stressed already.
Say, Josephine.... I just got an email announcing a second chance sale for FWBG on Oct 24th. Are you going to have more natives out then or is it just the Gardens?
Oh boy, I haven't heard about that, if they do it is going to be a lot of trouble.
I guess the FWBG didn't sell enough plants?
We shall see what happens, thank you for letting me know.
Without the Thursday sale and the bad weather Sat, it is doubtful they did. I know in comparison it was very slow in comparison to the previous year traffic wise.
