I know this is probably a common passion flower since it is growing wild all over my back and front field but could someone tell me what kind of passion flower it is. So many of the passion flowers on this forum look so close - I can't tell the difference in some of them. The ones in my fields have the fruit - I've heard you can eat them. Is that true?
Thanks.
please help ID this passion flower
yes you can eat them!..I grow mine in the house though so If I don't hand pollinate them I don't get fruit
It's Passiflora Incarnata (maypop) We used to stomp those fruits as kids.

trinawitch...how do you get seeds if you don't get fruit? I never thought about bringing them indoors. Do they live all winter if you bring them inside? How do you get the seeds from the fruit to grow new plants - let them dry out?
luvplantsinms2 - We step on them all the time. Sickening feeling until you realize what it is you stepped on...lol
CAUTION:
All parts of this plant are poisonous. The fruit can be eaten only after ripening on the vine until it gets yellow. That is what I've read in all the books.
That said, I have sucked the pulp off the seeds before it was fully ripe, but I don't eat the fleshy part of the rind until it ripens.
I got some seeds in trades and others I purchased at DG Marketplace. and yeah they live in the house just fine all winter, you just have to stay on top of them getting watered or they get all droopy and sad looking
I am trying to turn the house into a jungle! LOL
Thanks Poetinwood. That's good to know. So if we put them in the house and our dog or cat eats a part of this plant it will hurt them?
Trinawitch - I never thought about bringing them inside but boy would they look good mixed in with my other plants around my tub!!
yeah they do, and I wish the thing tasted bad cause I am constantly catching my little chupacabra chewing n the lower leaves of it and several other poisonous plants....she must have a cast iron tummy though cause she hasn't gotten sick not once
Well cause I'd have mine over the tub and my Monk (chihuahua) can't get near the plants I guess that would be a safe place for them. Do you dry the seeds before you plant them?
I was told to kinda scrath the seed, then put them in wet paper towels, then put them in an airtight container, and theres alot more to these than regular house plants that's for sure
ok, I'll go out and gather up some of the fruit. Can you post a photo of you passion flowers in your house?
very nice! This seems to be a nice plant to cover a lot of space.
they tell me there is one variety that will grow in my area outside and survive the winter, I wish I knew which one, I have a very ugly fence I'd Like to cover!
Trinawitch
The P. Incarnata I'm sending to you will come back from roots every year. There is another nice one I'll send the name to you when I remember it.
